Just bought a nice clean mk3, but there's no power to the head unit. What the first things to try?? I've tried 2 different head units and nothing. No obvious wires lose or pulled out, maybe a fuse? Where is it located?

Can't understand this mate as I only took my Sony out on friday and it was all good then!
-
Hey buddy, just had this problem myself, took 3 days of pissing around, but got there in the end. My problem was my ignition live. i just connected it to the permanent live and all is well.
However i should be asking, "is the a long term affect of this that can damage my car?"

Ah no worries mate, maybe a fuse has gone or something? I'll have a better look at it tomorrow, dying for a beer after all that travelling! Lol

Ignition switch (common problem) bit of a pain in the arse to fit, new ones available for 5 or 6 quid though, you can fit it one or two ways, first being if you have access to a decent puller and second of discontecting steering joint down by pedals and sliding out steering shaft from colomn to get at the screw holding in the switch

Sounds like abit of a nightmare! Is it a case of unscrewing it and swapping it with a new one? Will i need to go to the main dealer for a new switch?
Thanks for the help.

Still can't believe your having trouble with the headunits mate it worked fine with the Sony unit i had in wish I would have left it in for you now tommy.

Yea its the placement of the screw that holds in the switch that makes it such a pain to do, there was a guide up on another forum I saw a while back and I'm sure will still be there, I can dig up the link if you like, has pics etc so you'll know exactly what you're dealing with, regarding buying the part you can buy from ebay, eurocarparts, or through your local VW dealer/TPS

No worries here you go mate... http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3445064
VW I think charge in the region of £120 to do it the correct way which is to remove lock housing from the column with a puller to get at the screw/switch that way, have a look at the topic I posted and see if you can manage it?
-
Cheers for that. Does look abit tricky! My old mans a mechanic so could ask him to help me. Is there any way of making sure this is defo my problem?
-
Remove head unit, stick dvm on terminals and check 12v ignition is present, leave dvm connected and turn ignition on off a few times watching to see if its intermitant or low voltage
-
Just use the perm live mate, far easier than sorting the ignition switch!
Had mine like this for 5 or 6 years now.

Right....i unplugged the red and yellow again and swapped them round = still nothing
Then joined the red and yellow from the head unit side and joind them to the red connection and i finally get abit of Kasabian coming from the speakers!! Ive used electrical tape to keep them together. I'll just have to remember to turn it off when i get out of the car!!!
Thanks for everyones help
