Just got my 86 8v running after being stood for 3 years. All went well after replacing the fuel pump & started reasonably easily. Ran it up to tempreture, fan kicked in etc but heater blowing cold. Checked all pipes are hot except the one coming out of the heater / bulk head. Any idea's, not leaks visible (carpet is dry), could it be a blocked heater matrix?
Car is completely standard & I have not done any engine work at all

If its taken enough water (can't remember exact amount) and definitely hasn't got any air locks present, then it sounds as though it could be blocked.. First try draining it out again, and flushing the matrix inlet + outlet pipes, plus top + bottom rad pipes etc with a powerful hose, until they run clear, then re-fill and re-run-up. I use a 2 litre bottle to fill mine so I can count the water in, think its 4/5 litres ish. Think there's a guide on here advising about the running up process, cap off, engine on idle filling bit by bit etc, but I never have probs just adding water + squeezing pipes etc with engine off, until it takes no more, then adding cap, running to temp and adding extra if required

does it have the bypass valve fitted??

It could be faulty...

Did you remember to set the heater controls to hot when filling up with coolant?
-
That doesn't make a difference, it doesn't control valves etc, it purely moves a flap to channel hot/ cold air
-
Yes it does.

Where is the water controlling valve? The water comes in the flow pipe of the matrix, through it, and out the return like it does with the radiator. The cables pulled from the dash merely open/close flaps for hot and cold and which route it takes. It does not govern/regulate flow to the matrix. Think I've read somewhere the mk1 used to though...

I think it was only on the mk1 it controller a valve for the actual water pipes? After doing two heater matrix swaps on 90 spec mk2s, I know that the dash controls don't alter anything to do with water flow at all
