Title: Windscreen Replacement
Post by: T_J_G on 05 August 2011, 15:17
Right,

My mirror fell off of the Bora as the people that had the screen replaced must have skimped and didn't get the glass with the bracket built in and got a basic screen and bonded the mirror on.

I've tried all sorts of ways to keep the mirror on but none seem to last more than a few minutes or a few bumps in the road.

So it looks like I'll need to resort to having a new windscreen but Autoglass want £458 for one fitted  Has anyone used any other companies that could possibly do it cheaper.

Have you asked Autoglass if they can glue it on properly?

No they referred me to other companies who may be able to glue it on or replace the screen cheaper :lipsrsealed:

There was some bonding tape that a autoglass guy gave me once when my window dropped in to the door and it was used to hold it up until i replaced the mechanism. (about 2 weeks)

It stuck like sh!t to a blanket. Might be worth seeing if a friendly chip repair man at a shopping park might give you some to try out?

May worth a try cheers slick. I'll have a drive up Hempstead Valley and see if there are any glass companies parked up there. Just had a quote for £125 fr complete replacement from a local company.

If not, you can almost bet on their attendance at Bluewater on weekends, in fact their used to be 2 or 3 of them parked up there.

They'll just repair a chip, the screen is literally 3 months old.

Of course, if a hammer accidently fell on the screen then I'd go through insurance..

obvisouly a replacement screen through insurers means paying excess and it counting as a claim?

Shouldn't count as a claim. excess will be £50-100 depending on policy, if you have windscreen insurance

Does the mirror have a base that detaches from the mirror stalk? ie  a small metal plate?

Remove it from the mirror, and clean it to perfection, and also the glass, preferably with Meths, discard any fitting kits that you have bought... once the seal is broken, air contaminates the primer/adhesive, and becomes US. Buy a Loctite kit from Halfords, to ensure you're not buying old stock. Follow fitting instructions exactly! but only bond the foot plate to the glass, using the thinest and smallest amount... do this with your car facing the sun, preferably in the morning... natural UV light cures the bonding agent, leave 24hrs before you try to re attach the mirror to the foot plate..

The problem is, the Loctite kit from Halfords doesn't accomodate for the sensor in the middle of the mirror base. As you have to use that sticky pad...

although I gues I haven't got much to loose so i'll pop out and grab some tomorrow and give it a go.

Cheers
