Title: petrol smell - mk4 1.8
Post by: mak911s on 14 April 2005, 19:53
Not investigated yet, but when i stop the 1.8 Mk4 non turbo, on a run, i can smell petrol in the cab for small duration, then its gone.

Any ideas.  Tried lifting the bonnet, once and couldn't smell a thing in engine bay.

???

cheers

check all fuel pipes under the car.....

it could also be the breather pipe which connects to the side of the filler neck!! its on the side ... you should see it if you look under the drivers rear wheel arch... it should connect to the side of the filler neck!

on my mk 2 gti the clear pipe was held on by a jubilee clip! the clip had rusted and wasnt sealing it tight..
and i was getting strong petrol smell from both of my mk 2 gti's!!

a new clip... and i was smelling petrol no more..... good job because is was knocking me out!!

check the filter my 2.0 was leaking big time from the filter at the back drivers side, keep the engine running as you check so the pressure in the system will make it easier for you to detect the leak, good luck mate
