Title: Just failed the MOT, any ideas?!
Post by: Fallenidol1 on 04 August 2011, 18:57
Ok, so I've just returned with my car having failed it's MOT.
It's to do with the ABS light coming on. It comes on now and again, only typically it was on for the MOT.
If I'm driving and it comes on I can turn the engine off and on again and it will go out.
Is there any advice anyone could give me on either a) sorting the problem or b) keeping the light out for the purpose of the MOT re-test?!!

Cheers,
Dan.

for the mot go to the scrappy and aquire the full cover from a non abs car if there is no light there they cant fail it .

red ones are best.

Or actually fix the problem!

Probs just a sensor, common fault. Get it on VagCom and get the code read, it will tell you where the fault lies. Mine started intermittent, now its permanently on. Woth sorting as ABS failure can turn out to be a pretty serious problem!

Light should illuminate for a couple of seconds when the ignition is on. Unless they dont pay much attention, they will fail it on that. If you use the same garage they will know as well.

This is part of the test.

Ignore the stupid replies telling you to smash the lights or just disguise the problem. If the ABS light is on it is because you have a problem with your braking system, something which is pretty vital to your car.

As a first step get your car scanned with a fault code reader, my guess would be a faulty sensor(s) which is a cheap & simple job to sort

:afro: as Dom said get it scanned for codes as a 1st step.

Driving around with duff abs can mean that it goes off at very bad times.
nothing worse than abs cutting in as you approach a junction and overshooting............
True the system will cut back to non abs, but this can take a few seconds to register which is all it takes to squash a bike or lose your ncb.

Rear sensors are about £13 each, fronts about £18.
Always do two at a time (same axle) so they have the same lifespan, its just easier.

I had same problem with one of my Pugs, I never solved it!
It dont affect the effectiveness of your brakes just means you dont have ABS.
Learn to cadence brake!
