Title: Vauxhall to move "upmarket"
Post by: The Mighty Elvi on 04 August 2011, 17:46
This thread is full of LOL!

And I quote:

....."Chevrolet is an American brand with its own reputation and a goal of always being priced below the mainstream,” said Reilly. “In contrast Opel and Vauxhall are very European brands, with reputations for German engineering and pushing the boundaries of innovation."

Really?

Good news (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/258504/) for Chuff though.

A good start will be to ditch the Vauxhall name for the Opel one. What sounds upmarket about the name "Vauxhall?" *In harsh cockney accent*

Well I think Vauxhalls have been alright, I don't see what's funny to be honest. Especially the Insignia, that does look rather nice.

They are decent second hand motors. Definately not "upmarket" but neither do I think they are the dregs of the car world. French on the other hand! Had both by the way. Vauxhalls are cheap as chips second hand, and you get a decent standard of comfort. Buy new and depreciation will bite you in the arse. Be a long time and a lot of effort and step up in build quality before they can even  be considered as anywhere near German build quality, let alone be classed as "upmarket", if they ever get to that level. :undecided:

id rather have a frenchie than another vauxhall, only people who own vauxhalls are people who've only driven vauxhalls!

but i do like the look of the insignia, and i like how the alloys wheels are actually wheel trims on some models so if you kerb them its just a replacement piece, very clever.

Wheel trims? Upmarket indeed

the only reason anyone buys a vauxhall is because they are cheap... take that away and you have nothing.

In the bad old days of company cars I much preferred Cavaliers to Sieras!

Wheel trims? Upmarket indeed

i explained it quite badly, its an unfinished alloy, with a wheel trim on, so it looks and has the strength of an alloy, but if you damage it theres no refurb costs, its just a new plastic trim.

only downside is i can imagine qwik fit damaging a few thinking there proper alloys and snapping them

Nothing to be embarrassed about. Good car, plus a first car does need to be a sensible one.

As someone said, start by ditching the Vauxhall name and use Opel. But they'll need to do a lot more than that to gain a premium image...

I dont know what else they could do. These days, the presteige brands aren't really offering anything that the old time average cars now offer us in terms of equipment, ride and comfort.

Skoda and Seat spring to mind. Both companies have been transformed massively in the last decade and a half from being cars you wouldnt be seen dead in to being the smart mans alternatives to VAG's more expensive brands. Now Vauxhall may not be the top of the crop of mainstream brands at the moment (I put that squarely down to Clarksons original review of the Vectra myself lol) but they are certainly not as far away from BMW and Audi at the moment as Skoda and Seat were from VW and Audi before VAG worked its magic and whilst there is no real premium brand in GM's arsenal to base a competitor for the established premium players, it would be more than possible to let Vauxhall or any of their other brands take the lead in developing a floorpan that could be used in the same way as VAG uses theirs for a range of cars to suit different budgets and expectations.
One other point I would make is that Ford had a period in the 90's where they just couldnt build a decent car any more, certainly in the handling stakes (similar to Vauxhall here, they have always had a rep for good engines plonked in ill handling/torque steering cars) and started losing money hand over fist. Then in one swift move, they completely changed their approach, sorted the fiesta's handling (still on the same floorpan as the pile of crap that was the mk3 fiesta) and introduced the focus and got a rep for good handling, reasonable quality cars that were lightyears ahead of their former products and started making them money again. Its not all that hard to sort out Vauxhalls fortunes and the Insignia is certainly a move in the right direction compared to the Vectra, it just needs a change in attitude from the parent company.

I had a very nice 3.0 senator back in the day, the quality was much better than the equivalent granada/scorpio, but i agree that they should use opel instead of vauxhall, it has a better reputation worldwide.
