After a disasterous few months with a $hit ported head I bought off e-bay I've decided to wack my old one back on, but before I do, I'd like to give it an overhaul as it's been sitting in the shed since last October.
Is there such a thing as an overhaul kit I can buy..? What other parts will I require to do this..?
Can anybody recommend a good parts retailer with good prices..?
Cheers....P.S. its for a mk 2 16v

as the head is off it would be worth doing the valve stem seals and gudies and grinding back all the carbon deposits off the seats. not too sure about 16v in general but would it be worth replaceing the timing chain? other than that a set of gaskets and injector seals and it should be fine.

do the timing chain and the hydraluic lifters, will make the engine quiet as a mouse

Cheers for the responses guys.
Can anybody recommend a good parts supplier..? My mate who is going to do this job suggested the lifters and so far, the cheapest price hes got is £9 each..! Can anywhere you know beat this price..? I'm going to call GSF and Euro Car Parts today.

i got my lifters n chain from EuroCarParts. think i paid about 107 + vat for 16 lifters. defo do the chain it isnt an expensive item to buy, bout a £10 and you may aswell replace it now

I've also used Euro car parts for tappets, 20 of them
They were cheap and of very good quality, no problems as yet, very quiet engine!

Give Stuart from the Leeds branch a call. He'll give you a better price from Eurocarparts and that will include delivery to your door

RichandHazel, I wish I'd read your reply earlier about Stuart at the Leeds branch of Euro Car Parts...
...I went to my local branch today and bought a set of lifters for £122.00 and a set of head bolts for £20.00, both inc vat. The timing chain will be there tomorrow and thats only costing me a tenner.
I also called GSF and they matched Euro price for price but seeing and Euro were closer to work, I went there.

Don't worry. By the time you take into account delivery then you'll probably find the saving will be very little, especially if yours is on your doorstep. Stuart is ideal for me as my nearest Eurocarparts is 25 miles away so it saves me a lot of hassle/petrol and I know I'm getting a better price.
