Title: 16v power loss, jerking .....
Post by: walchy01 on 04 August 2011, 16:35
Hi all

Any suggestions on why the valver is running Iffy, put your foot down and it's jerky when accelerating, even when warm no change....powers there then it's not then it is, hard to describe but bloody annoying

It does tick over horrible also from cold and usually dies unless you keep the power on, soon as it gets to 50 degrees on temp ticks over fine, but still same juddering issue....

Thank you

When did you last thet the timing/fuel mixture/ checked?

How old is the fuel filter?

could be many things.

Timing done last year, fuel mixture and fuel filter not replaced or checked....

Sounds like an intermittent fuel starvation issue.

could be either pump/blocked filter.

As you don't know the age of the filter, I would change that regardless.  Simple job, but a PITA is the union joints are super tight.

Once you've changed the fuel filter and it is still not right, use the search function.

Then have a read of the set up guide ^

By a process of illimination / and doing a good service on the car you should get it running right.  From my own experience I had a leak in one of the joints on the air intake pipes.  This caused a big loss in power.

Have a read of this:

And others.

Could be your HT leads or dizzy cap breaking down, have you pulled your spark plugs out? are they sooty? or wet? could give you a clue as to which injector/lead is breaking down.

Go out and start it up now its dark! and look for any arcing around the leads and dizzy cap

Right, changed king lead and it's stopped sparking, so one thing less to fix...
Looking like time to check  fuel bits out...

If this is a fuel filter/pump issue, would the problem be intermittent??? Drove the car about 1 mile and it was jerking as usual  then restarted 5 mins later and drove fine for 1/2 a mike then back stuttering and jerking when accelerating...
Mmmmm this is pissing me off now

Have you pulled the fuel flow pipe off the metering head via the banjo bolt?  It should be under pressure, and when the pumps running, should piss fuel out. If it does, that proves the system as far as m/h, then its time to pull an injector(s) to prove flow. If none, work your way back, ie disconnect injectors from fuel lines and check for fuel there. You will need pump running and to lift air flap, this process is on here somewhere, have a search. Regarding fuel filter, any pattern one will do, its not got to last that long, as you should change it every 1/2 years. I used vwspares.co.uk for mine, was about a 5er, and was made by mann filters I think, which is a perfectly good enough make.

I think I've found it
On the plug lead where the lead goes into the chunky rubber that then pushes down onto the plug, I think it has come apart inside the rubber as it is not as stiff as the others, so there is a break in the lead, little bleeeeder......

Hopefully sort it next week

Back to normal... Can't wait, feel car sick everytime I get out at the moment
