Been painting around the arches after getting out the rust spots.
Have colour painted and laquered.
So now need to do the final rub down to marry in.
Have got some rubbing paste just need to know how best to go about this?
A mop pad on my sander (osilating) and a good dolop of the paste?
-
you want to rub the area painted with a 2000 grit then polish using a rotary
wouldnt use a sander or anything for the house. will get way too hot

As above Len, Ideally you should use a variable speed rotary polishing machine, well worth investing in, and will last you forever! Use 1500 or 2000 wet/dry with a little washing up liquid and plenty of fresh water, just a gentle rub, removing nibs in the paint, and deal with any orange peel, but not so much that you rub through the lacquer, and hit the base!... this will require re painting, so easy does it..
polishing mop head should be clean, and saturated with water (if the foam type) the excess water squeezed out, using the mop damp, will help stop heat building up, and less likely to damage the fresh paint...
Use Farecla G3 cutting compound (a good all rounder) a small amount applied to the mop head, and not the panel should work well, and not make too much mess, a marble size amount of G3 is sufficient for about 12sq inch,
Once you're happy with the compounding, wash the panel thoroughly clean of any remaining G3
You're now ready to finish the polishing process, using a anti hologram polish (3M's is excellent, though a little pricey) re polish the freshly painted area, using a specific polishing head (lambswool is ideal) do the rest of the car while you're at it! clear residue from you're paintwork, and wax at will...

Thanks guys!
I have given it 3 coats of laquer and wet'ndried between coats.
Its just the edge now really between the fresh sprayed on laquer and the existing.
-
you wont loose a laquer edge by just polishing
idealy it needed prepping up right then each coat of clear goes beyond the last , then after the final coat use fade out thinners to melt that edge
then a gentle polish after its dried hard
-
Its not a hard edge, not up to masking tape. Took all that off and smoothed off that edge.
Then 3 coats of laquer sprayed over the small area, feathering down in between each coat, so its only the final laquer coat.

It should polish in Len, as long as you keyed the original paintwork beyond the last coat of lacquer, and keep the heat build up to a minimum...
You won't know though till you've tried :lipsrsealed:

Did that!
See how I get on.

Well I think it looks OK.
Can still see a feathered edge if I look really closely, but dont think I can get rid of that.

It might disappear after a good couple of waxings Len

OK, have only given it one wax so far.
