Title: GTI Gearbox in a Golf Driver
Post by: mak2503 on 14 April 2005, 16:26
I was wondering if it is possible to place a GTI 8v gearbox in a MK2 Driver or is there complications in fitting it.
Does it make any difference to the drive of the MK2 Driver once fitted?

Also I am placing big bumpers on the car and was wondering if someone could let me know all the parts i.e. brackets to fit the bumpers. I already have the bumpers and the large metal bars but would like to know what additional parts I will need to purchase.

basically its a straight swap for the gearbox, they are the same unit although a driver has an E fifth gear. By replacing it with a GTi box it must be an 8V though.  basically the differenc is you have a more responsive fiifth gear but lose economy driving. However if the box aint broke dont fix it as its an easy ish  job to change but a pain to set it up

Re big bumpers, If yours is a 1990 G on wards it will have the holes ready for the mounting brackets for the bigger bumpers. Dont just use the smaller bumper brackets as the big bumper is not held well at all and either sags or comes adrift. You can get big bumper side brackets off ebay usually for about a tenner a pair. to take the bracket off all you do is push a pen or small screwdriver through the pin and it just comes off.

Funny, my old Driver had the same 020 gearbox as my 8v gti has now.  Check the haynes manual against your car's year, it may well be the same box.

The 16v one is different, but the 8v is the same.
