Title: Passat gearbox problems
Post by: tonsofun on 03 August 2011, 10:58
Last night my car (1.8 20v non turbo 1998 passat) shuddered to a stop, and now seems to be stuck in reverse gear, the car cannot be pushed or towed even with the clutch down. I am guessing the gearbox has gone.

Does anyone know which gearbox will fit, are they pretty universal like non older vag cars? As there seem to be more 1.8t gearboxes for sale than non turbo ones.

Any info would be great
Cheers
Mark

It does sound like the gearbox has gone.
I'm not sure what will fit, but i would of thought an audi gearbox is more likely to fit. Do these cars have in line engines?

yer engine mounted front to back, instead of side to side. i guessed some audi would fit, but there are alot more tdi, and 20v turbo boxes out there than my type, dont know if they will all fit? obviously the ratios will be different, but it is only my run around and not too fussed, just need it back on the road asap!!

Tdi box will be no good due to the ratios, turbo box should fit all ok, same basic engine after all.
