Title: Mk4 Golf Match Project
Post by: iansabf on 31 July 2011, 20:22
Thought i would share my car with you all. After owning plenty of mk2s and a few mk3s etc i bought this in October 2010. Its a Mk4 Golf Match 1.9 pd td 100. It wasn't what i wanted, was looking for a tdi 130 3 door but the girlfriend was complaining they were older and higher mileage in my price range and 'why don't i have that one' - pointing at a 1.4

So i ended up with this
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/101_3107.jpg)

It was only the other side of town so nice and local. All of the cars i wanted to view were at least 100+ miles away, although i believe its worth travelling to get the right car. Even so i went and had a look and test drive and ended up taking it home that day.

Its an 03 plate, 2 owners, 108k full VW service history, new cambelt from VW, infact it went to VW for everything! So i felt confident it would be a good car for everyday.

I decided i'm going to budget £1000 to make the car my own. So i've done a fair bit of wheeling and dealing since i bought it to get as much as possible for the money.

First thing i bought were the half smoke rear lenses as shown in the pics above. Followed by an Oscarli remap by Richard Washbrook. So should have bout 130 bhp. Going Veyron chasing now

Next some Montreal II wheels to smarten it up
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/100_3772.jpg)
This is how it stayed for a while.

Until i came accross some bits in the classifieds on here, ukmkivs and eBay. Got some grey recaros
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/08052011118.jpg)

Much better than Match spec seats
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/14052011127.jpg)

Colour coded door handles with delock
Before

After
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/14052011135.jpg)

Armrest and one of the newer cupholder quickly followed. Haven't got photos of these- you'll have to take my word for it! Then it stayed like this until june july time when i bought these for a good price
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/29062011156.jpg)
Not the colour i was looking for but the price was too good to refuse

Fitted
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/02072011163.jpg)
They came off quite a legendary car, never saw it in the flesh but read Dan's build thread on it- Amazing! He's a good lad aswel.

Didn't want to fit them until i had it lowered but i needed to sell the montys to fund the suspension  They quickly sold for good money so bought these
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/11072011170.jpg)

Had to wait for a whole week to use a ramp which was fustrating. Me and the old man fitted them to save a few quid. He was a VW mechanic for years so thought it would be easy but the fronts took at least an hour each! Struggled to get the shocks out of the hub. Ended up lowering the ramp with a metal stand underneath the shock/hub and bashing the hub with a hammer. The backs were done in about 10 mins in total  This is how it looked
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/17072011175.jpg)

Thats as far as i've got apart from cleaning it. So heres a few pics
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/100_3822.jpg)

The only other thing i've done is fit an extra heated rear windscreen switch (cheaper than a funk switch  :nerd:) and nicked a feed/earth/ light supplies from the heated rear windscreen to feed an extra cig lighter behind dash just to hide and tidy up fm transmitter and wires for ipod until i think of a better idea- like a decent headunit!

As it stands i reckon i've spent £930 after taking away the parts i've sold. I think i've done ok for my money

Quite pleased with it for now. For the future I want:
v6 front splitter
v6 rear splitter w/o cut out, think the later v5s had them
colour code the door rub strips
maybe a boot spoiler
joey front lights
paint the vw badges black with either a sharan or polo rear
maybe a nicer headunit and replacement speakers
Paint Calipers
W8 interior light
Bora vents
Leather 3 spoke steering wheel
Bora sport clocks
Maybe wheel spacers
Get the wheels put back to like the original anniversaries

If anyones got any of the parts i'm looking for send me a pm with a price!

Any feedback good or bad welcome

Cheers F17BAD, not my 1st choice of colour either, prefer them to the monty 2s i had. Thinking of getting the red part of the caps painted black or grey for now so they don't stand out as much. Long term i want the wheels furbed back to standard colour i think.

Looks great for a daily :afro:
Thanks wayne

Cheers blu. I'm liking your mk3! How many sets of wheels you got for it?? Are you the same blu that viewed my red mk3 16v? Might of sold you some wheels as well?

Yeah think they need changing. Going to look at the price or a complete wheel refurb make them shiny silver like they should be.

Can anyone recommend anywhere in warwickshire??

I would leave the wheels black and just change the colours of the centers.

 Found a place to refurb my wheels! I'm being held back which is my own silly fault- sold my old wheels!

Does anyone have a redundant but legal set of wheels & tyres kicking around in their garage? Ideally to loan but if not to sell? Just need something temp so can be anything really but cheap & cheerful prefered. Offers and donations welcome!

Haven't touched the wheels only with a sponge  Might not bother having them resprayed. Don't think its worth it unless they're done properly by aeromax or similar and i'm far too tight for anything like that! lol. Still fancy changing the colour of the caps, probably just to black or maybe anthracite? Any ideas?

So what have i done? Not much! Bought an expensive puppy so she has taken most of my time and money. She kindly dug me a hole whie i washed my car

Carbon wrapped my front badge
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/100_4519.jpg)

Painted the back part of the rear badge and wrapped the vw part (like doms) altough i think i might redo it the opposite way round- so wrapped behind and painted vw.

Fitted some uprated door speakers. Forgot to take any photos of them before i fitted  they're these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zero-ZX6-2-Way-Co-Axial-Speakers/dp/B001L6AHZU/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1322321621&sr=8-7 Not convinced they are vibe as i couldn't see it anywhere on the box or the speakers themselves but they sound pretty good, i'd recommend them for the money.

Bought this HU but have had it taken off me for a xmas pressie http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-KDC-BT61U-Bluetooth-CD-Receiver-Control/dp/B004JHY2Y0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322321723&sr=1-1
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/Mk4%20Golf%20Match/41CWfHX-5ZL.jpg)

So have fitted this old one for now. Usb wire in place ready for new HU

Painted the brake calipers red.

Given it a wash and thats about it.

Next i quite fancy fitting a sub into the side of the boot/wheel arch so gonna research how to do that next. Anyone want to advise me the best kind of amp to suite my needs? Want to run a sub obviously but would like to amp the 4x door speakers also. Would it be best to buy 2 amps or can i do it with one? I'm a complete amateur with ice

So next on my list of things to do:
Sub & amp
Paint centre caps
reverse the rear badge
cruise control
boot spoiler
v6 front valance
looking for a v6 style rear valance without the cutout? Anyone seen one of these? think the late v5s and tdi150s had them or it might be just be the models wth parking sensors?

Its been about a year and half since ive updated this!  Well ive moved house and fixing that up has become a bigger priority. Very little has changed since my last post. Did toy with the idea of selling and buying something newer with a bit less mileage. Can't bring myself to do it as the golf has been absolutley faultless, think i recall it having a number plate bulb for it mot! Also theres not alot you can get for the value my golf plus about £2k, seem to pay quite a premium for mk5s in terms of age and mileage in comparison to the mk4.

Got to take a passenger seat drive in this at work
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/IMG_0342.jpg) (http://s480.photobucket.com/user/ianmac212/media/IMG_0342.jpg.html)

Took the RCs off as tried to sell them with little success! I really like the monty 1s so picked a cheap set up from stafford. They stayed on for about 6 months but the missus said theyre too scruffy haha
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/IMG_0613.jpg) (http://s480.photobucket.com/user/ianmac212/media/IMG_0613.jpg.html)

Kenwood HU
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/100_6378.jpg) (http://s480.photobucket.com/user/ianmac212/media/100_6378.jpg.html)

Sub build never happened but i bought this as a make-do for now
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/100_6379.jpg) (http://s480.photobucket.com/user/ianmac212/media/100_6379.jpg.html)

Can't remember when i put this in but used an extra heated rear windscreen button for the remote switchwire for the sub so radio djs voices dont sound so daft and bassy
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/100_6375.jpg) (http://s480.photobucket.com/user/ianmac212/media/100_6375.jpg.html)

Gave it a quick wash and this is what its looking like
(http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/ianmac212/100_6357.jpg) (http://s480.photobucket.com/user/ianmac212/media/100_6357.jpg.html)

Rcs are now in the classifieds http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=252942.0

And thats about it! I've got some monty 2s to go on if the RC's ever sell
