Title: MK5 GTI Noise
Post by: Poached on 31 July 2011, 16:08
Hi

I have recently purchased a MK 5 GTI DSG 55 plate with 36k on the clock with FSH. It has recently passed MOT with 0 recommendations but there is a strange sound I notice at steady speed between 40-60 mph.

It seems to smooth out or disappear after 60 (perhaps road noise increasing reduces it) and seems independent of acceleration/deceleration.

I would describe it as a sort of wobbling/vibrating sound. It doesn’t occur when the car is being turned round corners or bends so I wouldn’t have thought it’s a CV joint issue etc?

It doesn’t sound as if it is coming from the engine then again it can be difficult to pinpoint sounds. I also wouldn’t say it is increased over bumps/uneven road either.

Perhaps some of the more experienced owners may be able to help me out?

Any help/comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Deformed tyres? Dunlops are they by chance?

Probably tyre deformation we get this at work with most gtis due to profile of tyre gives abit of a rumble / hum

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I have since noticed that not all the balance weights are present. This may well be the cause as well as wheel balancing.

Does anyone know where I can get them from?

Saint Steve - They are not Dunlops, they are Continentals.

Just get a good local tyre place to rebalance them.
