Hi all
i have very recently purchased a mint '90 gti 16v, its only had 3 owners and done 80k, its in superb overall condition buit have some very minor issues i would like to sort if anyone could help that would be great , as i want to make the car as mint as original as possible.
1) it has lovely BBS alloys which are very light scuffed, does anyone know where can i can the refurbed locally and reasonably -i live in Burton on Trent, Staffs.
2)I have finally sussed how to use the MFA computer but cant seem to forward to the digital clock one hour, is this a common thing? Everything else works on it.
3) When someone sits in the passenger seat , it has a very annoying squeek and creaking, is there a place on seat i can spray with WD40 or is it more serious?
4) It needs some replacement tyres soon, what makes are best for this model without being too soft i.e Yokohamas.
5) How do i post my pics on here, in really simple terms please, i am registered on photo bucket and got pics on there, but cant suss out the next step!
6) it last had a cam belt change at 47k, its on 81k now when is it due?
Overall it is a fantastic motor, very wel maintained and a joy to drive, it will be a great car for years to come i hope :cool:

replies to your answers.
1. Have a look in the yellow pages or on the net.
2. The clock always fails on the MK2 instrument clusters and it wont adjust with the buttons. the trick is to remove and replace the clock fuse at exactly midnight to re-set the clock back to 00:00
3. Seat creaks are normally due to the little white plastic supports either side of the rear floor mounts breaking up, if not and yours is a 3 door its probably the tilt mechanism.
4. I would go for a good brand of tyre, I always use P6000's on mine but good years or toyo's are supposedly good for the GTI.
5. Ether host them on the gallery or if you want to put them into your messages then use the bottom link thats under your pic on photobucket.

6. Seeing as I would chane the belt at 40,000miles just to be on the safe side it sounds like its not far off, always use a genuine belt and replace the tensioner with genuine also.

just to add. you can get wheels done at most good spray shops , i have just had mine done for £30 a wheel so use that as a guide
price,. Just my opinion but i have found P6000 to be sh!te , made my car feel weird on corners, i use eagle f1's there a bit more
expensive but r a fantastic tyre :wink:. Dub was right about the sig picture but for a laymans wright up off how to do it go to the
vw- related section and at the top is a post on the ' how to sig pics' by rich, jv and a few off the guys, they will even do it for you
if you email them the pics. I change the cam belt as a matter off course every time i buy a car, alot of piece of mind for not alot off

2. get a BIC Biro pen and push n hold the hour button in, eventually it will move - the VDO clocks dont fail. its just the buttons are a pain in the ass, you need to push them in the correct place/angle to get them to work!

Well no, it is actually a known problem for them to fail and a trick I have used in the past is to get a clock unit from a type 25 camper as these seem to be better made from the offset.
Unless the numerous ones I have worked on have all had dodgy buttons which I doubt.

if the clock function works then i'll bet the buttons work
if its stuck on 00:00 then you can say its banjo'd

the clock does function just wont forward with pen, will give it another whirl..
been quoted £78 +vat to change t/belt and tensioner by vw specialist in burton, i will supply belt which i thought was pretty reasonable

make sure you buy a VAG timing belt, dont be skimping on something as important as a timing belt

Also get a genuine VW tensioner, I've used a GSF one before and the Tensioning tool I have didn't even fit it.
the only downside is that they cost about £50 for the 16V from VW :cry:

Yes, I have used them. Only once so far though, for a service. No problems...
Its a bit further to travel, but midlandvw in cannock are also very good.
