Title: 'Flat' spot when accelerating

can anyone help?  i've just bought a mk3 8valver, (which is slow i know, but i still have my mk1 mr2 for fun).  When accelerating hard the car sometimes feels retarded, like its being held back.  it seems to happen more in second, although sometimes from rest.  it usually happens about 4000rpm.  Can anyone help PLEASE?!?! ???

Check ignition timing marks. Put some redex in the fuel tank to clean out the fuel system as it could also be clogged injectors.
