Title: Turbos
Post by: bobbarley on 29 July 2011, 13:02
Would blowing compressed air through a turbo without pressurising it with oil beforehand lightly bugger it up?

If you do it too long that it can damage the bronze bearing, but if its for a few seconds then there should be no issues.  I did it each time I but a bigger comp wheel in my k04-001

Depends how long it was done for, one quick blast would not hurt it but a prolonged one would.

I can only recommend that you send it to a reputable company to get a report on your turbo that will tell you how and the buyer why the bearings have gone - If you need pointing in the direction of a specialist PM or text me mate

How about long enough to test how much boost the turbo would give?

You aint going to mak any boost using an air line you need to have 100x the air flow to make is boost.

What are you looking to do with the turbo? Clean it or test it?

as long as there is some oil in the turbos bearings puffing it round with an air line isn't going to hurt

shaft speeds will be very low compared to if the turbo was on an engine and working.  you choud blow a roller bearing turbo rould all day with an airline and it wouldn't care.
