Hey all,
Very brief lurker and now new poster here; Gareth from Leeds.
It's company car renewal time and I've specced two Golfs as options:
1. GTD 6-speed Manual 5Dr
- Carbon Grey
- DAB / Bluetooth / Cruise Control
- Winter Pack
2. Golf 2.0TDI 140PS Bluemotion 6-speed Manual 5Dr
- Deep Black Pearl
- Black Vienna Leather
- Dual Zone Climate Control
- Front Fog Lights
(Obviously Match spec comes with a few other extras: RCD 510, parking sensors etc)
I've been advised I can have either, which is good news, but now I'm spoilt for choice! Really like the look of the GTD, especially in the exclusive colour, wheels and rear lights but the extras on the Match are probably better from a 'driving' perspective - i.e. spending 20K + miles a year inside the thing.
My missus had a Match for a few months which I really liked, but I'm coming from a Seat Leon FR which has similar power output to the GTD, so dunno what to plump for really.
Cost-wise the GTD is £82 p/m in tax, again similar to my Leon, whereas the Match is only £52 so I'd likely be saving money.
So... what would you choose and why? Answers on a postcard. or here if you want me to read 'em! All advice gratefully received...
:undecided:
Cheers,
Gareth.

GTD - Because it's a diesel GTI (nearly)

After looking at those 2.... the GTD without a doubt.
then remap it
-
I would ask your company for realistic lead times on both, everyone at my company that has ordered a vw with the 170PS diesel lump has cancelled it and gone for something else because the orders were forever getting put back. All of the 140PS options have arrived in a "reasonable" time. I ordered a GTD and after 32 weeks of waiting I cancelled and took a GTI that was already in UK stock which arrived in 3 weeks and puts a smile on my face daily :)
-
GTD all day long. The extra £30 a month is neither here nor there.
If a GTD is not possible due to lead time, how about a GT TDI? You won't get quite as much spec as the Match, but it does have nicer seats, sports suspension and better wheel options.
-
As dubs has said ^^
The spec on the Bluemotion is no better than the GTD except for the leather and the cloth seats in the GTD (and GTI) are very nice looking and comfortable so I'd not worry about that.
-
The GTD is an awesome car just get it, rest assured you wont be disappointed , better cabin more refined quicker brilliant with DSG
-
No brainer.... GTD all day

This is my main concern. My car isn't due for changing until the end of the year, but my missus works for a fleet company and has been regailing me with me horror stories about 8 month + lead times on various VW's.
At the moment I'm leaning towards a non-BM Match 140 with leather and a few other toys. If I knew my alternative to waiting would be a GTI that my change my opinion!

What a about a nearly new one to avoid the waiting times. Or is it company policy to buy new?

Disclaimer: Please forget I was ever here if offended by this post.....
If your after a true drivers car then the more powerful engine will likely make driving easiest / effortless outweighing all other potential options.
BM doesn't live up to its claims and is a little common, GTD (got it right this time) are rare and therefore more exclusive £30 well worth it. Match is nice, GT is better.
Cloth will wear better, Leather tends to crack when its hot, so couple some fun time with your missus and the winter seats = well 'crack'ed seats.

Sweeping statements there - if you look after leather (eh hum maguires) it will wear far better than cloth.
On the to GTD or not to GTD - Go for the GTD, if the choice is down to two diesals then you want to go for the one that's at least got the looks!

Not quite true imo...... My cars a couple of years old, done 30k, is used daily and the leather is as good as new
However I seem to remember some stories on here about bolster way on cloth seats

VW leather is known to be less than hard wearing plus it is not all genuine leather, some is made up of that dodgy stuff they call leather faced!!.
If I were you I'd go for the GTD with the cloth seats as mine are as good as the day I collected the car, you have the looks of a cloned GTI with the fuel consumption positives of a diesel, with the extra bit of va va voom.

I start talking about girls and "cracks" on seats and you boys start pulling me apart on the differences between cloth and leather, I think you should all stop what your doing and go out!

You two!!
Now you see Gareth has a choice of two cars - both a Diesel - therefore neither petrol and that rules out the GTI so he's asking which diesel will be the better option not for one of you petrol loving boys to put down his new company car - so pay attention , back to the question - out of the two listed which is he better off getting?

We may drive petrols, but we're men of the world and can appreciate a good Diesel or two. But neither of these stir our loins like the mental picture of Amanda in her leather gear does.
Gareth (welcome Gareth, btw) doesn't stipulate that those are the only two car choices he has, merely that he has specced those two. We're just trying to save Gareth from himself as he has to suffer the purgatory he chooses for the length of his lease.
I think he needs to look a bit closer to home for which model to choose ... speed blue ... xenons and 7 digit nav as standard ... DAB and Bluetooth standard ... 18 inch alloys standard ... and this is where my forum marriage will disintigrate ...
-
Andy, the forum marriage is intact as the car was not named.

I think your marriage is safe - has it ever been consumated? If not, it may be a sham marriage.....

Hahaha, cheers all, I see there's a lot gone on since I last had chance to look /post.
The naysayers are correct; I don't just have a choice of those two models - basically I can have any 4/ 5 door diesel car I like up to £425 + VAT a month on a contract lease; 3 years, 20K per annum. As long as it's not a BMW (office politics because my MD has one and wants them to remain exclusive).
I'm hearing a lot of love for the GTD though, and I do think that's the one I'll plump for. Just need to get my order in now as the current contract expires in January 2012!
And for the record, I hate to be the stake driven between any formum marriages with my first post... I'll wait at least a month before going to those lengths!
-
Okay Gareth, the gloves are off.
Match: Wobbly suspension after you being used to the FR, try before you buy. Nice spec apart from that.
GTD: Lose the met paint and go for the bigger wheels (me= tart)
FR+ : You know this makes far more sense
-
Right, I'll slap you all with my pink (pale red obviously) marigolds if there is any more talk of that Spanish Lizard.
