right i have a 92 mk2 8v and i has got rattly top mounts, they are only about 6-8months old and a genuine vag ones from a dealership,
The problem is when im steering and goin over a series of small 'stutter' bumps i can hear what i presume to be the drivers sdie top mount rattling, i have checked that they are done up tight, both the slotted bolt (used a vw tool) and the big lock bolt on top. i tightened them up with the springs compressed so i know they cant tigthen any further. i then checked them with the car on the ground.
Still rattles tho, what else could cause this? do the bearings in the top mounts develop play?
just wanna see if there is anything else i should do/check before i fork out for 2 top mounts
any ideas?
cheers guys

is it defo the top mounts
if you jack the front of the car up abit so the wheel is off the ground. then make a wee see-saw type thing and put one end under the wheel then tap up in down this will show up any play in the top mounts! (take the top mount cover off obviously!!)
ill draw you a v.rough diagram of what i mean!!

Just had mine done and had the same problem. One side needed further tightening of the lower ring (VW tool) to stop the rattle. Easily sorted, thankfully, and has been fine since. Fingers crossed for you!

Sometimes if they have been stuck in a main stealers stock room the bearings can get sh!tty. I always put a little bit of grease inside the bearing for that reason.
I've fitted 2 new ones to the front of my 16V and the left one sometimes creaks first thing in the morning. I put it down to the fact i always park up over night with the left wheel up the kerb.

right i checked everything again, i dont think it is the top mounts, it does it mostly when i go round a right hand bend on an uneven surface, does it slightly to the left as well but no where near so much,
so i reckon its either drivers side suspension arm/subframe bushings rattling as they become 'unloaded' or it is something to do with the anti roll bar on the passenger side rattling as it becomes loaded/unloaded
this is gonna be an annoyance to fix i can feel it........
