Title: is this car too cheap??
Post by: vw spur on 25 July 2011, 19:17
yesterday i continued my hunt for a GTi, i went to look at a car at a local garage not to far from me, 2007, 57 reg, metallic black, 5 door, 18" monzas, 78000 miles, full service history. now the history seemed a bit odd, its first 2 services were done at a VW specialist (ivc) in leeds, then the next 3 were done with VW dealers in leeds, last serviced by VW at 76 000 miles, i find it strange it wasnt serviced with vw from new, can anyone shed any light on that for me?? also if i asked VW about the service history, would they tell me if they recommended the cam belt neeed to be done but the owner declined. Audi told me something along those lines when i checked my current cars history.

i asked about the cam belt, he said they arent due til 100 000 miles(i think thats what he said), he said its in the manual. so anyway, the cam belt hasnt been done, i am a bit cautious of taking things further with this car as the cam belt not been done, should i walk away and forget it??

it has a couple of little imperfections, but nothing that cant be sorted out, interior is in excellent condition, front alloys are slightly scuffed, with near new continental tyres all round. also its a 1 previous owner car, and is advertised at £8,495, does that seem too cheap?????

Whats your budget for a mk5, that does seem fairly cheap for a 2007 reg car.  Was toying with the idea of selling mine if you are interestred.

Sounds like ex-company. see if you can find more info on the previous owner.

The cambelt needs replacing after 60k or 4 (5?) years so he is wrong and it should have been done. The fact he is a garage and didnt know this implies he isnt a VAG specialist and sells any odd car (this isnt a bad thing, just saying). I wouldnt bother, plenty of cars out there that have been looked after.

Just my opinion.

I'm definately no expert but i would also say Cam belt should have been changed after 60,000... Although if you are saying the car is quite cheap and your main concern is the cam belt then getting it changed once the car is yours is worth thinking about and then you know you don't have to worry about it again for another few year

thanks for your opinion, its much appreciated, your right, i am not going to bother with that one, i have seen another gti which sounds much better,  its a 2006 06 reg, 74000 miles, 1 owner, full VWSH, 18" monzas, full black leather, winter pack, CD multichanger along with a few other bits and pieces.

its 100 miles away and i cant go to see it til saturday, knowing my luck, it will be sold before then lol

think your right, but am going to give it a miss, i just find it hard to believe its been serviced by vw and they havent done the cam belt, maybe the owner declined the recommendation from them to get it done, if so it makes me think what else have they skimped on?

well after an early start this morning, i drove 2 hours to go and view a gti i had seen for sale. i am so glad it was worth the drive, its in great condition apart from a few stone chips, but thats to be expected. its got full leather seats, 76000 miles on the clock, full vw history, cam belt dne last september, cd changer in arm rest, cruise control, heated seats, electric folding mirrors and a fresh set of continental sport contact 3 tyres. £8000 i paid, that sound like a good deal??

feel so glad i found one i liked the look of after looking at a few that were not as they were advertised
