If Doc can provide a facility like Bluefin for the same cost so that may enable me to remove and re-install tne re-map at will, then I am possibly interested.
I had to wait for after my first service (which was at the end of March) and change of Insurance Company before I would attempt anything.

He certainly does, your map is retained and can be loaded back on whenever you like.

Well, that's good to hear. He's never made this clear to me. So, the original VW map will be saved which is a good thing.

Thanks Steve matey I'm very flattered  :embarassed:

Jim's lucky as he's (more than lightly) not got the anti-tuning protection you have so he can have a "map by post" using our customer remapping interface, this interface gives you the choice of two maps to load to your car along with the original map from your own car that you can change at the touch of a button.

The unit also allows you to read OBDII fault codes from any OBDII compliant vehicle and the best part is that as long as you put your car back to standard when you part ways with your car you can re-use the interface on your next car (as long as it's on the interfaces list of vehicles it's compatable with) or you can resell it.

The retail prices are £275 for a remap or £375 for a custom remapping session plus £200 for the user interface.

Given the kind nature of Steves post I'll sell these units here at £375 including a remap or £425 including upto half a day on our rolling road for a custom remapping session.

Please note that vehicles with anti-tuning protection cannot use the interface, the cost for an anti-tuning remap is £475 but I'll do those at £325.

Any questions

Regards
Craig

Great. I am your man. August 6th would be perfect. If you wish you may use my work car park which is covered in case of rain. It's in Kings Cross, London WC1. For the 5th August, I'll have to sort things at work which could be PITA.
Title: Re: Calling all Londoners
Post by: The Doc on 24 July 2011, 23:09
How nice

Why not make it a MK6 meetup?

More details on the handheld unit:

Carbon Chiptuning sells a customer held tuning unit called a Powergate Personal OBD programmer (think blufin), this unit has the ability to store 3 maps, first being the original map from your car, second being mod map 1 (i.e. Power map), third being mod map 2 (i.e. Winter map).

This unit also has the ability to read basic "P" code faults from most OBD equipped vehicles.

The units are sold at cost of £200 delivered in mainland UK and map packs for the unit start at £150 for a normally aspirated vehicle.

If we do a group buy I can get the prices down for the unit

1 x Powergate II S 196,00
5 x Powergate II S 175,00
10 x Powergate II S 160,00
25 x Powergate II S 150,00
50 x Powergate II S 140,00
100 x Powergate II S 125,00

A great feature with this unit is that if you sell your vehicle and have put the stock map back in to your vehicle then the unit can be used to time and time again on your subsequent vehicles so long as you revert them back to stock.

Please understand THIS UNIT WILL ONLY WORK ON ONE VEHICLE AT A TIME and has to be put back to stock to do another vehicle.

Here is the vehicle list that the unit will work on:  http://www.alientech.to/pdf/web/Pwglist.pdf

Here is a little more information on the box: http://www.alientech-to.it/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=121&lang=en

They arrive in printed blue or plain black depending on which way the wind blows

Just to explain the difference between the two mapping options.

Option one CARBON remap:

Your remap is written from scratch using the information we download from your ECU, this remap is custom written for your specific vehicle using our experience and best judgment to give you an OEM feeling, linear remap that we can tune to your driving style.

Option two full CARBON custom remap:

For this remap you would need to come to our facility to have your car tuned further again on our rolling road and can, if required include modifications such as exhausts, air filters etc.

Thanks
Craig

Debatable

Standard: Yes the MPS is quicker but not by the margin you would expect. The GTI fights very well.

Both cars @ circa 260hp: The GTI is much quicker when given equal grunt to the MPS

Both cars mapped: The MPS struggles with the power much more than the GTI initially but does stronger at higher speeds

I'm not saying this to start an argument, just stating what I've experienced.

Even if that were true, which according to fastlaps.com it isn't. In many cases the Mazda is less than 0.2 second a lap quicker and on some tracks the STANDARD GTI is quicker that the MPS. Now imagine the lap times with a mapped GTI

If it were all about speed we'd all be driving be poorly built torque steering monsters or chav Imprezzas....

Actually according the comparison tool on the Fastest Laps site the MPS comes out on top with the verdict being that the "MPS is noticeably faster".
http://www.fastestlaps.com/comparisons/mazda_3_mps_mk_ii-vs-vw_golf_gti_mk_vi.html (http://www.fastestlaps.com/comparisons/mazda_3_mps_mk_ii-vs-vw_golf_gti_mk_vi.html)

The verdict is based upon the websites own rating system which awards points based on track performance which, although the MPS does prove quicker on almost all the tracks, sometimes only manages a few tenths of a second faster than the 50hp down GTI. But, because the MPS secures the faster time, it is simply recorded as a "win" for that track. All these "wins" count up and give the MPS an exaggerated performance rating. Stock for stock the MPS is quicker, but not by much. Give both cars equal power however and then see what's quicker. Even if both cars were mapped I reckon the GTI would be quicker around more tracks.

But anyway, we have hijacked this thread and I do apologise. I will now cease my digressions.

EDIT, just out of interest I have compared the MPS to a Scirocco R. The Scirocco R represents quite well IMO a mapped GTI as both cars are obviously VAG, both have the option of DSG (although I don't know if the cars tested use such facilities), both use XDS (IIRC), the same FWD chassis (Scirocco being based on a Golf IIRC) and both chuck out around 260hp.

Using these new parameters the Scirocco R is rated "noticeably quicker" than the MPS but again the more accurate picture is shown by the differences between the lap times. Consistently, the Scirocco R is 2-3 seconds faster on each track. Whereas the MPS could sometimes only manage a few tenths quicker than the standard GTI, a FWD VW with similar power to the MPS can manage a few seconds quicker than the Mazda.

Here's the link http://www.fastestlaps.com/comparisons/mazda_3_mps_mk_ii-vs-vw_scirocco_r.html (http://www.fastestlaps.com/comparisons/mazda_3_mps_mk_ii-vs-vw_scirocco_r.html)

Now I'm finished hijacking

If you can have it then the Alientech box is a handy piece of kit

I have it for my car and its very quick and reliable for swapping maps around.

Best bit is it stores your original file so you can return the car to stock at any time

May i ask how option 1 works for those meeting in london for an example. Im curious how this is done.
Do they have to supply you with their map first and when you have the meet you then supply the new one?

Have you any sample option 1 rolling road printouts for a mk6 GTI to show as an example of the curves that you expect compared to stock of a map spec you would recomend to use please?
Thanks.

The original map is downloaded from the ECU on the day, they have the kit and software on their van to make the necessary changes

Whole process takes a couple of hours depending on the vehicle

Modified file is uploaded to the ECU and you drive off into the sunset with a big huge grin on your face

Great work there chaps!!

Although seeing as I now own both you could have just asked me

The GTI handles its power much than the MPS as std. The MPS however is designed to take the 260bhp and does therefore cope quite well with the extra power. The GTI is still much nicer to drive than the MPS... but the bang for your buck in the MPS just seems to add to the fun factor.

Quite a few MPS's out there running over the 320bhp with a few mods... so even in a remapped GTI you have been warned. Consumption is a beeatch but the xenons (std) and Bose stereo make up for it.

the mps sounds  where as the GTI continues to sound like a Diesel  :lipsrsealed:

I knew Jim would chicken out. Wish Doc had not sent his kit before the meet.

Jim: It's on a Saturday. It's a straight run down the Marylebone Road, not much traffic, there's no Congestion Charge, you have a Sat Nav, be brave and meet me and you'll appreciate it no end. I'll even test your hearing for free and fit you the hearing aid you need so badly.

On the other hand, Jim might stick out like a sore -thumb having been re-mapped in advance. And, I know he does not want to polish my Breitling.

Doc: Slough (Slug ) is just down the road from me as I live in West London. There is hardly any traffic on a Saturday as most Londoners are recovering from a tough week. It takes me 20 mins (max) to get from Chiswick to King's X. Jim can bomb down into King's X with ease. I'll even pay for his petrol!

I am game for Saturday 6th August and so is Steve. Jim's loss if he chicken's out.

My bijou Hospital Covered Car Park on Saturday 6th August is very suitable, IMO. Totally empty and I'll arrange toilet facilities. We'll bond, then we'll have a meal and a natter. Darren fitted my RNS and another one there. The long bar in St Pancras is worth a visit.

Remember, I cannot drive long distances due to a serious shoulder issue.

Not to mention bladder problems

Nightmare place Windsor. Anyway, we are getting re-mapped not shopping for darling watches.
Don't you want to listen to my hi-fi?

Hi mate,

Seems that way mate, I'm still hoping that Nick hears back from Alientech and it's another reason for the error, can you remind him to try and find out first thing Monday please?  I'm going to speak to Superchips too as they have a money back policy if the ECU is protected.

Cheers,

Jim

Yes mate, no problem - you can only try

As with most anti-tune ECU's you dont normally get the bad news until you try to upload the modded file

On the later anti-tune fitted around mid-2010 like in my car you cant get any information at all via the OBD from the start.

I don't want a removal of the ECU remap whilst it's still in warranty. I'm going to try Superchips and Revo and if they dont work then I might throw my toys out and get a new car

Thanks Steve, not that I know anything but I've never read anything anywhere that suggests an early 09 car has a locked ECU. I'm hoping that the issue is with the AlienTech module.  CarbonTech are not 100% it's locked and are going to update me tomorrow.

I could be wasting my time but I want to know for sure.  An R could be on the cards quicker than I'd first thought.....

Maybe Doc can confirm this but I don't think any GTI has had the ECU locked, AFAIK it was only the diesels.

Mine is BW7 2010 and it was fine and when I talked to Superchips at that time they had never encountered a GTI with an encrypted ECU.

Jimmy, sorry I meant to ask has your car been into the dealers for a service or any software updates?

Seems sneaky VW are also retro installing anti tuning protection on earlier cars with MED17 / EDC17.....
