Title: How much to have power steering installed ?
Post by: r4_rick on 13 April 2005, 10:14
Seen a rack for a 16v on ebay for £150, anyone any idea of what a garage would charge to install ?  or how many hours it should take them ?

Any problems with doing this ?

Mines an 87 16v

Strange I was going to ask this question today :)

Managed to get a rack (in fact a complete system but I only needed the rack) from ebay for £100.

The Haynes is pretty comprehensive in description but not any helpful diagrams.

And as I'm concerned that if I do the job the bolts might come loose and I lose the front end, so getting someone else to do the job would be good.

I priced this a few years back it was around £1000 in part from VAG :(

Not sure about the extra pulleys you need on the engine also!

I think there's some guy selling a complete kit for Buy Now of £150. So that's probably the one.

I got a quote for getting it fitted yesterday (had to get a tyre replaced at it had gone to canvas in 6 months!)

They reckon fitting will be £150.

So where did you get you rack fitted Gambit?

Just had power steering fitted to my Jetta GTI 16v also fitted it in the past to my Jetta TX. Seat toledo's are a very good source of spares as they seem to have lower mileage and run MK2 running gear. The last rack pipes pump etc was from A 55k Toledo and cost me £35. Its not that difficult to do if you don't mind getting your hands dirty just remember you'll need to change the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column as they are different for cars with pas

golf girl, would the Toledo rack, etc. fit any age of Mk2 Golf or is it only suitable for later spec. cars?

Tell you the truth can't be too sure mine were both 1990's although the GSF catalog lists the same power rack part number from 86-91 if this is any help. There are two different reservoir tanks but I far as I know both will mount. (the age of Toledo I used was approx K-L reg)

if you can raise the car a reasonable height off the ground the job shouldn't be too difficult. i just fitted my 1.3 with the whole running gear from a 16v, engine, box, suspension legs - the works. depending on where you are i may be able to help.

£150 sounds like a decent price and once fitted im sure you'll agree it's money well spent! if i were you i'd find a garage with a good reputation and pay the money. saves you the head ache and you'll have the piece of mind that your beloved car is in good hands.

Golfgirl, please explain the following you quoted earlier,
'just remember you'll need to change the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column as they are different for cars with pas'.
I have found a Toledo 'M' plate with PAS, please advise re. the universal joint and if you can be bothered give me a detailed description of all the parts I need to remove from the Toledo. Your advise has been very helpful, I managed to get a rear set of speakers from the Toledo that are a great fit for my Golf and are more powerful than the original VW speakers, only cost £2.00 each.
