Title: mk1 gti not started for 2 years, help
Post by: neilsmk1 on 23 July 2011, 22:37
Hi guys, my mk1 golf has not been started for 2 years. Every so often i have cranked it over to avoid ceasing. Today i have finally got round to having a go at getting it running. I managed to get it to start but only runs for a couple of seconds. I have fuel up to the fuel filter but when i losen off the injector pipes on the top of the metering unit there is none. If i continue to start the car after approx 3 times i will not fire up, however if i leave it for a few minutes then it fires up and runs for a few seconds. Any ideas!

Thanks

I would start with draining the fuel tank and trying fresh fuel.

^^^ This plus there may be loads of sh*t in the tank/system. what condition did you leave the car in when you put it to bed?

I would also check to see if your fuel pump is working correctly.  When you turn the key to position 2, can you hear the pump prime for a couple of seconds? When yuo go to start the car and it runs for those few seconds, can you hear the pump running again?

It's been garaged all the time. The tank had very little in it before i put a jerry can full in.

I meant condition of the car before you put it in the garage, filters, fuel etc.  For reference, its not best to store a car with naff all fuel in it.  You're probably going to need a new filter and more fuel in it than a jerry can,  it will be pulling in crud from the bottom of the tank and possibly blocking up the filter.

Have you checked the pump operation yet like I suggested?

if no fuel to injectors but fuel getting to metering head then i would say that the metering head is gummed up with crap and therefore fubar, try a known working metering head

yes the pump is fine, Can the metering unit be taken apart and cleaned or is it specialist.

It can be removed and cleaned intact.  Seriously wouldn't recommend taking it to bits, its a very complex bit of kit, specialist only.  As said, source another one if its at fault.

It's all there as far as i know, i have decided to take it for an mot,  so as soon as i get time i need to free off the rear brakes as there binding and fit a new fan switch (fan works). Drove it for the first time today and was suprised how nice it drives. If it fails on things that are going to take me far to long to sort i'll be selling it as is and listing failed items if not i'll be selling it with mot. Whats it worth with mot?

Thanks guys

That famous question..... How long is a piece of string?

I couldn't tell you without seeing it in person.. I don't think you can sell it as a car that doesn't need some tidying up so I would say between 2-3k with a ticket if it's as solid as it appears.  But this is a total guess as I have no idea on condition of the mechanicals, interior etc.

Dont get me wrong this is far from mint, but it is a very solid base to start. I'm going to mot it and see what the damage is lol.

To be honest I think your current asking price is a little high for something that hasn't moved for a couple of years and needs tidying up.. but again I haven't seen the car close up, checked behind the arch trims, bottoms of doors, engine bay, spare wheel well, rear valance, condition of engine, interior etc... The front panel looks a little messed up, what happened there?

Knowing how it fairs up against Mr MOT will help gauge the price too I think

the front panel has a shallow dent in it but not had a hard hit, the seats are not great but the carpets and dash etc are good, the boot floor is very good however there lip where the boot seal pushes onto has some rust. The engine bay is in great condition and the engine runs well. Bottom of the doors are good. I'll see what the mot reveals next week hopefully.

Apart from the panel it's sounds pretty good for the year... Good luck with the MOT.

i have a new front and back panel if the buyer wants them. However it's a bit extreme changing the front panel for the damage thats there. I work in the bodyshop industry (vag approved i might add lol) and it would be easier to put a skim of filler in.

Golf now been for mot. failed on everthing to do with rear brakes, front to rear brake pipe corroded, flexi hose, insecure fuel pump, insufficient fluid through washer jets and fog lamp out. Advisory on slight corrosion on outer sill. I was really happy with that to be honest. All repairs done and cost £43 for all parts. Now has full mot. happy days

That's alright then.... at least you know it's solid.
