Title: Rubbish quality on JOM Coilovers - what now?
Post by: andy.cowman on 20 July 2011, 22:08
Hi all

So I ordered some JOM Blue Coil overs from Venonmotorsport. They have arrived and I was happy until I started looking at them closely. The welds on the rears are totally different - on one the weld goes all around the lower mount BUT has holes in it. On the other shock the mount is only welded on one side with a pathetic looking weld. It really looks like it would break if I dropped it.

Showed it to a friend whose a professional engineer and he just laughed and said there was no way he would want them on his car so I am going to send them back. Question is what else can I get?

Budget £200 (might stretch a BIT if its worth it) for 4 shocks and springs. I am not bothered if they are coilovers or spring and shock I just want something that will be safe so if you have part numbers or suggestions and can point me at someone who can sell them to me then please let me know.

Thought I had this all sorted :(

It all depends how low you want to go, for a 60/40 drop i'd recommend spring & shocks. For anything lower coilovers, but be warned most budget coilovers come from the same factory and are just branded differently

Hello - not that bothered about the ride height at the moment. The car is used daily by my GF so I just want it to be safe!! Ideally 60/40 but normal of 40 all round are all fine by me.

Any ideas on where I can get something worth owning for the cash?!

Cheers

have you contacted venom and explained the problem? I recon they will either replace or exchange without too many problems

(b.t.w when i worked for bosch, dependant on where the product was made....the quality was shocking on some stuff but still sold at the same prices!!) At least your buying cheap coils and there cheap for a reason (lower quality materials & cheap labour made)

Just fit a good quality spring and shock kit.

I ordered a Bilstein kit only to be told they couldnt get it, then tried another standard set up and was told after two weeks I had another three week wait to gave up a bit.

If you have some part numbers and some place I can order from please let me know so I can order them!!

Spoke to Venom and there are a few options - what are peoples thoughts on Spax or Koni?!

Koni is excellent :afro:

i have spax, not coilovers but springs and shocks, be careful with the spring cup sizes, i have to run low profile tyres to clear them.

I would get SPAX coilovers if they would go lower then 65mm!! i would suggest trying to get some coilovers that give adjustable damping too!

A little over budget at £770, but would be my suggestion: http://www.venommotorsport.com/manufacturer_product.php?manufacturer=FK&category=suspension&product=KonigsportCoilovers&make=VW&model=GolfMk3

Spax & Koni both have excellent reputations, although if your on a budget i'd imagine Spax would be a better bet

How much do the h and r cup kits come in at now? Think they're about 180?

budget coilovers = budget ride. I'd save up a little more and get weitec hicons.

Courier ordered to take the offending JOMs back tomorrow and I will go for the SPAX I think, they have two options and the one I am thinking of is:

http://www.venommotorsport.com/manufacturer_product.php?manufacturer=Spax&category=suspension&product=PSX&make=VW&model=Golf%20Mk%203 (http://www.venommotorsport.com/manufacturer_product.php?manufacturer=Spax&category=suspension&product=PSX&make=VW&model=Golf%20Mk%203)

Hopefully the GTI will then be nice and safe and good again after that!

Weitec Ultra GT kit is also worth considering:

Weitec Ultra GT kit is what i fitted to mine a few months ago, pretty decent quality for the price point although im now running Eibach Sportlines on the Weitec shortened struts as the spring rate i had was wrong and wanted a touch more comfort.

Weitec Ultra GT does look very tempting - how do they stack up compared to the SPAX ones in terms of build quailty?

I think some of it might come down to what they can get sent out to me fairly quickly. The car is currently dragging its arse about

:(

I have the Weitec Ultra GT set on my mk3 valver and they are superb, great ride, not too harsh, handle very well, no crashing, cant fault them!  They were on there when I bought the car, so at best guess they are at least 3 years old now and still pull their weight!  Get some!

Swings & roadabouts tbh I think, i've heard more positive reviews of the Weitecs than SPAX but neither of them are poor quality. If it were me i'd pick Weitec

Bilstein B4 shocks and Eibach pro Kit springs. This whole set up will cost around £300 and you get very good quality stuff.

I got it all from http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/. Give them a call (I think it was Colin I spoke to), very helpful guys, super quick delivery etc etc.
