Title: Carbon Parts for Mk5 Golf, Pics and Prices.
Post by: 8vMatt on 19 July 2011, 22:44
Hi guys,

I have started a similar thread on the mk6 specific part of the forum- http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=199624.0

Once I had been in contact with the supplier, it became clear that they produce a good range of parts for the mk5 Golf. I thought that I should start this thread up and find out about any possible interest and feedback about the parts available.

I am now in contact with a Carbon Fibre manufacturing company out in China. They supply a lot of companies who sell different car manufacturers products to the public internationally. Parts are 100% made from Carbon Fibre and not an existing part wrapped in carbon.

I have a few examples of what is available to you and there are some firm prices. This is very much a work in progress, if you are interested in something and need a price, I will find out the supplier details and get back to you. All products are made to order at the moment, as I'm not able to hold a stock yet. Orders are running at approx 4 - 6 weeks build and post to the UK. The first order is in progress, so I will let you know the lead times when it gets here.

Mirror Covers - £70 posted in the UK.

The sheet is showing the same price to me as the mk5 & 6 items, so I would be able to do them for the same £70 posted. I'll ask to see if they have pics of an actual A3 cover. The mk5 Mirror Cover pics have come out well to show how nice they are.

A development from the supplier-

They inform me that they can make pretty much any part in carbon by using an original part for a mould. I'm going to take up this option to have some Corrado parts made for me and to sell on a couple extra pieces. They state that if 5 pieces of the same part are bought, then there will not be a charge for creating the mould. Also by ordering 5 parts of an item helps with the necessary bulk orders they need.

If you guys have a chat with mates and see if there are bits that 5 of you want and can supply a part for me to send off for the mould, I will investigate the possiblility of it being made and get some kind of costing for you.

What do you think?

Here we go, a reply on the materials and methods of production as copied and pasted from the email.

At the moment we have a few types of curving method:-
-       Hand Lay Up (Wet lay Carbon), typically automotive carbon parts you see in the market
-       Vacuum Bagging (wet layup, then bagging) and use pressure to suck all extra resin from the mould
-       Vacuum Infusion (dry layup, then bagging and infusion the resin into the mould)
And for the terms ‘resin’ – most of the people only concern about the cost, but actually Epoxy is the best ‘resin’ to mix with carbon for the structure and strength.
For our vacuum infusion item, we can do them in 3 type:-
-       Polyester with Carbon Skin w/ FRP Back Bone – Like wet lay, but more tidy and less imperfection
-       Epoxy with Carbon Skin w/ FRP Back Bone – Same as the above but extra strength
-       Epoxy with Dry Carbon (No FRP at all) – Motorsport use, most extreme

I'm waiting on the production and delivery at the moment so I can't check them. I would say they fit just the same as an OE cover as they use an original part to make the mould. I'm sure people can confirm that I would think the cover just snaps into place, have a go with yours

Hi guys,

I haven't had a pic of a mk5 rear diffuser yet but to give you the idea of what the factory is producing for me, here is the mk6 GTi rear diffuser. I have 3 of these coming with more to come in future orders.

No problem, let me know what parts you're after and I'll start a new order. Because  the factory is so busy, the production run is taking 4 plus weeks. Sounds like this could work for you for next month.

Apologies for the lack of posting on here the last week or so but just waiting really. I've chased the manufacturers for some sort of production finish date and have been told we are looking to finish the order by the end of the month. Hopefully shipping will be quick. As its my first order with this company, I'm learning as we go with them as far as timescales work etc.

Looking forward to receiving the box or boxes. Been hoarding bubble wrap now!

Do they offer anything for the Audi A5 range?

Hi mate,

I've just looked at the Audi list given to me and can see they offer mirror covers and a 3 piece 'Ducktail' spoiler. I don't know what it looks like as I have no pics of it. Is there something A5 owners would like to have available in carbon?

Thanks for the enquiry, Matt.

Very valid point there. This is my first dealing with the manufacturer and I will be stressing the importance of shorter production runs. I didn't help matters by adding to the order several times during production. I tried to accommodate everyone that wanted parts but this caused delays to the shipment. I won't do that in the future. As I get more used to what parts are in a higher demand, I'll save up money from my day job to be able to place an order for parts to be held by me in stock. I've not been able to do this so far. I will do my best for everyone to ensure a smooth and timely sale. Cheers Matt.

Hi mate,

Originally I thought the covers were replacements but now I have them in my hand, I can see they would fit over the top of the mirror housing. The carbon cover is at most, 1mm thick. So it wouldn't look too bulky on the mirror. Plus you have the added bonus of not taking your mirror apart to fit them, so no chance of damaging your mirror. A small line of silicon all round the cover would keep it in place and if someone decided to go back to original, then just peel it off.

I think I have read that the covers fit a Jetta also. I can double check this you're interested.

Thanks for your enquiry.
