If I change my grill on my MK2 GTI from a 4 lamp to a 2 lamp grill, will the MOT station fail the car due to the inner lamps being removed??
As they always try to fail my car for not having side indicators, even though 84 mk2's didn't have them fitted on the A plate like mine
-
i dont think it will, as lont as you've got the side light, full beams and normal lights (whatever the called) and there adjusted right you shouldnt be failed
-
You can remove the inner lights and it won't fail the MOT
-
Cool, as im starting to like the look of the 3 bar grill with the inner spots removed, or as 1 MOT station said "they are Fog lights"
Stupidly I replied, If they are fog lights why do they only come on when the Full beam is on & NOT when the fog light switch is pressed
-
I'm probably going to get this round the wrong way but what the hell. With the mk1 campaigns, they were fog lights, otherwise they should be spot lights that come on with the main beam.
Either way I'm pretty certain you don't have to have them fitted for the MOT. Now rear fog lights, thats a different kettle of fish all together and you will need that for the MOT.
-
thats true, and it took me ages to figure out that you had to have your dipped headlights on before they would start working :embarassed: :embarassed:
-
My mk2 was standard with a single head light grill, so are lost of drivers so no problems, i bet the MOT place won't even notice!!
Our MOT man is quite good, will see how good in June when the Caddy Kreg will have no side repeters and no cat!!
-
No cat on a K reg...............hmmm, could be pushing your luck there :undecided: H reg you'll get away with it but no later
-
As for the side repeaters..........they quite often miss that
-
Mine are inner spots and dont come on with the fog light switch and can only be used on full beam anyway so should not be required for the MOT.   ÂÂÂ

Rich, I haven't got a cat and mines a J plate. I think K/L was the cusp, cats were legal from '94ish I think.  :undecided:
-
Paul, I thought it was 1992, but I stand to be corrected. Has yours never had a cat, or has it been removed?
My 91 Polo has a cat fitted but when it packs up I doubt I'll replace it.........probably take a trip to powerflow

Yup Rich, you are right 1992 -----> http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_transstats/documents/page/dft_transstats_507875.hcsp#P397_15751
Here's the snippet -
1992
Speed enforcement cameras introduced at permanent sites.
All new goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes to be fitted with 60mph limiters.
Minimum tyre tread depth of 1.6mm is introduced.
Catalytic converters fitted to all new petrol engined cars.
Toyota comes to Britain, producing cars in Derbyshire.
Mine never had a cat as far as I know, it was registered in December 1991 though.
-
Thanks guys 'n' girls, I'v Just to be able to find a Grill with the correct fitting clips for my mk2, it's quite hard as it think my slam panel is the same as an MK1???? :undecided:

Ah yours is an early J, probably one of the last to get away without a cat then

Be suprised if it is. Front end of a mk2 is very different to a mk1. Can you not remove all the front end i.e top panel, grill etc....to gain better access to the engine?
-
i think anything mk1 0r mk2 doesnt have to have a cat because of its age......
-
I just had it in my mind that a J plate should have a cat. Obviously that is the cut off year and later J plates will have one.

i think anything mk1 0r mk2 doesnt have to have a cat because of its age......
Mix, some mk1 cabs and mk2s were K (92/93) and very, very rare but they also did mk1 cabs on L reg (93/94) so they may have needed a cat if introduced after 1992, whether that means registered or built after 1992 to need a cat, I'm not sure.  :undecided:

My grille has 2 large clips on top which secure it to my slam panel, were the later grills i'v seen have smaller clips on the top which fit into the slam panel???? HELP
-
CATs "should" be standard fitment on anything J plate and above if sold in the UK. They "Should" be fitted for an MOT, but if you're car can pass the emissions without it they probably won't notice.

Well the G6 Plate might come in usefull, just will have the wrong year of make on the MOT I guess!!
-
 Nice one

i got no cat and mine is j plate
-
Yeah, I take that statement back........ must admit I had thought that H plate was the last to get away without a cat but it now looks like the cut off was J plate so early J's may not have one fitted, but late J's will need one.
-
To clear it up.
The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most class IV spark ignition petrol engined passenger cars with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992.
hope that helps
-
In that case I guess the catalyst test was from K reg then.
