Title: Restoring a 1979 mk1 gti
Post by: Maltloaf on 12 April 2005, 13:43
Hi all,

I have joined the elite  and found a classic mk1. 1600cc, 5 speed, with the old style dash, and only ?127,000miles?

Ok she needs some work, but not so much to abandon the project.
I am trying to source some body panels, and would like to know if anyone knows of a company that produces the front and rear panels. These seem to be the only ones that need replacing. I am guessing that it will be more difficult to find a rear panel as it has the small lights?

Also anyone know a good VW breakers in the Bristol area?

Cheers

Matt B.

What a beauty...........nice one and good luck. GPC seem to be quite a popular site for panels.

One of these days I'll get round to doing my X plate one. Its solid underneath and has an immaculate interior. Needs the O/S wing replaced and a complete respray.

Its 1982 so I think its one of the first with the changed dash, rear lights etc.....

Cheers guys, much appreciated.

She ain't bad for £100.

I have a few plans for it but going to try to get it as close to original as possible. The strip down and clean up begins first.

shhh Gary cut one in half with a disc cutter a few weeks ago!!

You can get them on e-bay sometimes, a tip that works, buy 2 back ones (quite a bit cheaper) and then just cut your indicator holes in one to make a front one!
