Quite a lot of the MK6 boys bought some and were very impressed. If you got the wonga to do it then I cant see why not. They DO give better traction and grip in the snow, fact.

Yep, fitted to mine and also the wifes car last winter and it made a tremendous difference. Would be an essential purchase for me with any future car

Yep we had winter tyres on our runabout last winter (the golf languishes and never goes out in inclement weather), made a very big difference so well worth it. Don't forget winter tyres aren't only for snow, they are designed for lower temperatures as well so still a good choice even if you don't get loads of snow. But where we live we have a lot of snow and it's very hilly so it's very well worth it for us.

Not needed on the Passat as it's 4Mo and has ESP.

If I don't have a 4WD car next winter I would consider them.... although I think buying them would be the kiss of death to cold winters.

I was joking mate :) I dont change my tyres for the winter and i guessed they wouldnt be good in the snow, but for other 363 days of no snow i want something nice! lol.

I'd consider them but it's too much of an outlay for four extra wheels AND four more tyres, and then no where to put the ones not being used as I live in a small apartment!

the amount I've heard people spending on winter wheels and tyres, you could pack yourself away somewhere hot for the 2 or 3 weeks of the year we have snow!!!

or just learn to drive?

lol ! :D

Sort of my thoughts aswell. I ended up driving in to London for quite a few days as the trains packed in and dispite the shocking conditions and my SUMMER Goodyear Eagle F1s I made there and back with no (major lol) dramas quite a few times. Yes, I got stuck a few times but got out.

All depends where you live. f**k getting stuck in some country lanes in the middle of nowhere.

I live in the countryside nr Newbury & work in the countryside nr basingstoke never got stuck but do find it's better not to stop going up hill in the mk4 as the grip on the front isn't great. If the snow is really bad I take the g/f 1.2 polo that thing is great fun in the snow!

I wasn't aware that learning how to drive had any impact on your tyres finding more grip?
Have I missed something?

By about October, I find my summer F1s are slipping too much, understeering out on the road, struggling for grip out of junctions.
I'll put my Vredestein Wintrac Extremes on again, and all will be well.
In the depth of winter, and 6" of snow I can't get the car off the driveway with the F1s on...
I can go where I want with the Wintrac extremes on.
Simple choice really...summer tyres and stay at home, or winter tyres and go about your busines as usual.

I agree, hence me saying it really depends where you live. I can just about get away with around my way. I only ever drive in the snow if I HAVE to (hence me saying the trains weren't running). I don't trust other road users driving in the snow.

I'd consider putting some on the front but to be honest where i live the only thing getting round in the snow had very large wheels and a new holland badge on it.

Only got stuck in an ancient 3 series automatic. Bit of neutral drive, neutral drive and got out alright.

Can DEFFO see the advantages in winter tyres but I didn't get stuck just had to drive inconvieniently.

Best fun was a 4x4 Ford pickuptruck in RWD mode. Thing was insane, could have it near on sideways all round the bends and then let go of the accelerator and it just snapped back in a straight line.

Mine needed doing around winter time anyway so I got some part worn bridgestone blizzaks on for £80 fitted. They looked new, even had the nibbly bits still on them. Very good in the snow. I liked going out in the snow with them...

Does anyone know what size of alloys (minimum) will clear the calipers on a MK5 GTI. My wifes' car is currently on 18s. Can I go as low as 16s?

Regards.

I'm looking at some wheels maybe winter steeley's for when I take delivery of mine in September, though one though I have is doesn't that mean you clock more miles with a 16" over the circumference of an 18" wheel.

The 16" wheels will have larger tyres than the 18" wheels. Overall they will both have the same radius.

I had winter tyres put on my caddy last year and they were brilliant. like driving on normal roads.

Also had the snow socks before the tyres arrived and they got me out of goathland (where they film heartbeat) so you can imagine the hills i had to get up in a front wheel drive with a heavy load in the rear.

Considering having them put on the Golf this year if i decide to keep it and not get a 4x4

Mine (sunny snowmasters, el cheapo) are fitted to a set of Monzas off ebay.  Winter has no worries for me now.  My F1's were just a load of rubbish in the snow, very very dangerous.

My 1.4 Lupo with budget tyres was good in the snow! drove everywhere, even made it up a hill only 4x4's got up.

Didn't even spin up either :)

Maybe i can just drive better than you guys moaning about your top of the range tyres not gripping in the snow :P

A lot of budget tyres are awesome in winter, saw the auto MK3 everywhere last snowfall.

I have ditch finders on my mk2 and it wasnt terrible in the snow. I walked home from work because the traffic was horrific due to people just deciding to rev the tits of their cars in first gear and just spinning up the wheels. Winners the lot of them

When putting winter tyres on that are good in the snow,as soon as the snow goes should you take them off or are they OK?
What brands would people recommend that are cheap?

they are specially designed for use on cold weather and should have snow flake symbol marked on them
they are supposed to work best when  temps are below 7deg's - they work well on ice too.

from oct to March in most central europe countries.

the blocks are designed to act like brushes and trap snow / ice and use that to grip
i read an article on them while waiting for car to be serviced

It's all about the sipes in the treadblocks.

Also the rubber compound is very different to all-year/summer tyres, so it remains flexible at low temperatures, instead of hardening up and stopping gripping.

DH, would you cause damage so to speak by using them when theres not actually any snow or ice on the roads?
Title: Re: winter tyres ....who bothers
Post by: Diamond Hell on 21 July 2011, 16:09
They just wear down very much faster, because they go sticky much lower down the temperature scale and then breakdown, so you could get the 'sausages' of rubber along the sides of tread blocks that you can generate on track with summer tyres just on a spirited road drive.

DH, would you cause damage so to speak by using them when theres not actually any snow or ice on the roads?

they wear quicker in warm temps and increase fuel use due to increased rolling resistance
