depends on condition, 3 or 5 door, colour, originality, big bumper or small bumper etc, if it`s a clean big bumper 3dr with no major rust, dents, collision damage £2.5k - £4.5k all day long
-
all original 3 door red small bumper no rust or dents from what iv seen
-
£4.5k all day long
For a Mk2?
You can get a Mk5 for another £500!

getting a clean, v/low mileage with full dealer history big bumper 3dr mk2 is very hard to do and i`m sure if you could find one it would be for sale at the top end of my estimate.
as there will be buyers for £5k mk5`s there will be buyers for £4.5k mk2`s

Mk2 with full dealer history?
Yeah, I imagine that would be very hard to find.

Why dont you just ask your neighbour how much he is looking for it, i am sure that with him owning the car for so long and keeping it very well maintained he is going to have done his research into how much it is worth, as stated it isnt every day you come across a mint full serviced mk2. If it was me i would be looking towards the 3k bracket as for that type of money you are looking at a mint one that has been very well maintained

I would say main dealer history isn't important, a stack of bills would mean more to me.
I'm not sure i could pay that much for a mk2. I did pay £7500 for a mint 16v in 1999, and i thought that was silly money

Does he know how much they're worth? If he dint asking him how much he wants will give u a good idea of price range. You never know he may say 2k n I'd offer him 1500... You could grab a bargain if you play your cards right!

Nice... yeah, if it were me I'd ask how much he wants for it.. you never know it could be the other way round, could pull the rare card on your ass and ask way too much for it.
