Title: Tapping/Knocking under my feet??
Post by: Jimble on 16 July 2011, 18:38
I don't know if it's just me going mad but just lately i can feel whats like a tapping or knocking coming through the pedals when moving, i can't feel it through the steering wheel at all, it's not a hard knock and feels almost like worn bushes or similar but as the car has done next to no miles really i doubt it's anything like that
I keep telling myself it's the cr@p Dunlop tires but i'm not sure? has anyone else experienced the same or similar and can shed some light?

Thanks

Do you do alot of quick pullaways? As it could be one of two common things.
The traction control can feel like a knocking.
The rubber bushes holding the exhaust could have gone faulty a common problem with the mk5 and iirc the mk6 is the same setup..

Definatley not the traction control mate, it happens when rolling along if you know what i mean? :embarassed: but the exhaust thing sounds plausable, i just don't remember it doing it before, i wish i could drive another one to see if it's me going mad! or someone else with one drive mine, i wish i could get to the rolling road meet in october but i'm on my stag weekend then, dammit!

I'd get those tyres thoroughly checked.

I may well do that tbh.

Does it happen with foot on the clutch whilst moving. ie, free-wheeling, or is it harder/softer when braking?

Have you checked the obvious like a stone stuck somewhere. I once had a stone stuck in a vent in a brake disc and it was knocking against it's back plate.... But then I'd assume it would be felt in the steering??

Worth a check tho? and run your hand over the tyres to see if there's something stuck in the tread?

You can feel it when moving through the accelerator pedal and with foot rested on the clutch with no pressure, i had a quick look at the tyres but may have missed something i suppose, i did a 400 mile round trip last weekend and it was constant so if there is something in the tyre then it's probably going to be expensive!
Cheers for the reply mate.

I still have a feeling its the big metal clamp for the exhaust at the front. Its red bushed fail on the mk5 and im sure the last time i was under my mk6 it was the same clamp.

Ignore the big red chunk of metal  but you see the red bushes near the front of the car on the alloy engine subframe. (bottom right of the photo) They are a known week spot.

Hmm, could i reach that lying next to the car? i don't have any axle stands and i'm not crawling under it on the factory jack!
