Hi all,
Am looking to sell my car in the next few months and cant decide on what to get. I have narrowed it down to two cars, the Ford Focus RS (New one) or the Audi S5. I know they're totally different cars, but I have no kids and dont use my car for work so am not bothered about economy.
Which would you rather have?
-
I know this is no help at all but I would be very happy with either, perhaps it's more about what you want from a car ?
-
got to be the rs
-
Well i've no doubt they're both fast cars. The S5 has more power but will probably be heavier as it's got a V8 and is a bigger car. The RS is also stunning and also quick. The RS is more likely to sell easier as it doesnt have a V8 which I imagine would be less desirable?
-
parkers.co.uk is pretty good for car reviews, check it out if you haven't already.
personally id have the ford focus :)
-
V8 AWD v's sh!tty FWD Ford that doesnt even make expected figures..... ooooh a tough one
-
Has to be the S5. Waaay cooler than the Focus.
-

Can you explain what you mean please?

V8 AWD v's sh!tty FWD Ford that doesnt even make expected figures..... ooooh a tough one
Neither does the Audi V8...I've never seen one make the expected figures yet.
-
Would the RS be better for practicality if you ever needed it, looks a bit more spacious than the S5 to me.

Being honest, neither of those two.
for that sort of money you can buy something really interesting, if the practicality side isn't important.
Maybe a Cayman?
-
depends if you want to blend in or stand out.
An S5 will just look like another audi to 99% of people whereas the ford is pretty unmistakable.
-
I am being drawn to the RS more than the S5 now. I'd love an S5 but there seems to be more pros for the RS and the reviews are better for it too.
Just gotta sell mine first!
-
now, i am thinking you might get a better responce on a neutral forum,
perhaps pistonheads

Is a cayman interesting? I dont like them at all!

Personally ide have the s5
Rs's are nice and all. But nower days you seem to see too many on the road, I've only ever seen 1 s5
-
right, whats ya budget, ? and MAIN requirements :undecided:
Lets go get some wildcards for ya
-
I think this would suit you

Off the top of my head.........
Budget - 20K (ish)
Economy - Not bothered
Space - Enough for me and the missus, but would prefer at least 4 seats.
Engine - Want at least a 5 cylinder to give a better engine sound
Power - Ideally no less than the RS
No astra VXR, porsches, not too fussed on BMs, thats all I can think of atm.
Fire away.......
-
Is a cayman interesting? I dont like them at all!
Depends if you want something to look like a wan*ers chariot, or something sublime to drive?
If it's the latter, you are missing out by not driving one.
It runs rings round the other two.

Ahh...right. So it's the image you want, rather than a selfish, drivers car?
I see...
The Audi will suit you fine I think.
I suggest one in white, with the 20" wheels.

Do you want something nearer to this

Isnt a cayman a poor mans 911? I just dont think living in a 1st floor flat with a porsche sat on the drive is a good look lol!
-
right then, stretching your budget a tad, but a cash off should get it,
ALL the engine noise you will EVER need

not a TRUE VXR and even more engine noise , 4 door practicality too

According to blinkered people who have never driven one, yes.
But they are fools.
The Cayman is brilliant.
I just dont think living in a 1st floor flat with a porsche sat on the drive is a good look lol!
I had a new 911 sitting on the driveway in my ground floor flat (and worth more than the flat was). What's the issue?

i could keep going, but if you have narrowed down a 20k budget for a LARGE engined motor to those 2 then i am afraid you are blinkered
4k change for ya fuel bill

S5!!!!!!!!
absolutley lovely cars and i'd never choose a ford over one!!
-
I know how to sort this........ TEST DRIVES!!!
-
Could buy a Golf and a chauffeur for £20k.
That'd be nice.
-
Well to be honest, I've been driving for around 6 and a half years and owned golfs for all but a year of that. It's time for a change. Dont get me wrong the golfs are great, only had a few problems along the way but just fancy something different
-
For £20k you could get yourself a Lexus ISF V8.
0-60 in 4.2 seconds in your Japanese Mercedes.

Will have only just run in, omething Exclusive, hand build engine.
-
^^^ very nice
-
Having drove an S5 with most extra's I can say I wasnt that impressed, there was no sense of urgency and seemed to refined for a sports car. It was more of a cruiser, so if its simply between the S5 and Focus, I would take the focus.
But there are so many better cars out there:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2982201.htm
/\ everything the focus, wishes it could be!!!
-
Focus all the way i have friends with both new RS and the ST and all pushing over 300bhp without any problems whatsoever.. loads of room.. easy to cruise around town.. sounds sweet on overrun.. for me there is no choice.. plus im an Essex boy which is the last nail in the coffin

get the M5. Bloody hell that's alot of car for that money.
-
Yes the M5 is alot of car for the money!! mate has one with a remap and its a mean bit of kit. They are known to eat gearboxs though, so you HAVE TO get warrenty or leave well alone.
My money would go on this
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2665799.htm
-
A mate of mine had an M5 for a few months and in the end he part-ex'd it for an r32 because he said the M5 is an incredible car but the running costs are in the supercar league ie servicing and parts and he couldn't stomach it anymore.
How about an M3? pound for pound still one of the most capable cars on sale and most of the t**ts have moved on to 4x4's.

E46 m3

Avoid E46 at all costs.

E46 m3
Avoid E46 at all costs.
Why?

They are built absolutely terribly.
I've had 3 now (different engines, expected different things) the trim was loose, they are ridiculously uncomfortable and badly designed inside, they are just terrible. Plus the fact that there are more E46's on the road than Mondeos means you have to really be in the company of a BMW snob to know the difference between your 46 M3 and the school run Mum's 320d m sport.
They're quite fun if you turn the traction control ALL the way off, but they're so heavy, when you get the grip back in the rear wheels, it's really severe, plus you're so uncomfortable it's hard to enjoy driving it unless you're wrecking the rear tyres.
M5 is a much more refined drive, not to mention comfy as hell and imposing to look at.
-
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3010699.htm
man up.
-
Think the Evo X was the best suggestion, its everything the RS wants to be and not chavy, the super cars such as the Aston, Maserati etc... Good idea's but the maintenance costs will molest you making the evo seem like a cheap 1.2 polo.
I love the look of the A5 but wouldn't get the s5, focus looks chavy, doesn't produce the figures and the vag counterparts such as the mk2 LCR, s3 will run rings round it.

I stand corrected and i am suprised to hear that, i know 'M' bmw's are know for being hard work on lumpy british roads but the build quality issues are a worry especially from such a legendary car as the M3, i'm still inclined to think that pound for pound the M3 is good value considering the performance as the M5 is in a different league with regards running costs.

That's interesting...
My mate had an FQ360 and it went through twice as many services, 3 sets of tyres and 2 sets of brakes, whilst averaging 18 MPG, in the same period as my 911 got through a pair of rear tyres and averaged 19 MPG.
Evos are not cheap to run if you use them...
Not all proper sportscars are expensive to run - principally because they are engineered for the job so don't wear bits out so quickly.

An automatic honda?
-
get a manual one obviously
-
All i have to do is see mr wolf from pulp fiction and his Acura to want one badly, one of the finest engines ever made.
-
If you go for an RS just make sure you stay away from Allen Ford, thats all.
-
S5 all day long !
The RS is a great bit of engineering but its just chaved to the MAX !!
-
RS out of the two, they are legendary. However if I had 20 grand to spend I'd have an MPS - cheap (relatively), amazing performance, most composed car I've been in and you hardly see them so it's a bit more interesting/rare.
-
id save my money n buy a mk3    or not...
-
My father in law has a green rs with 360 bhp. He lets me drive it when im over there and damn it it is fast.
I really didnt want to like it but it feels so good despite all this crap "its a ford".
Driving up the motorway few weeks ago and there must of been some honda thing goingon somewhere because there was a huge convoy with loads of them taking pictures of the rs and some filming it saying speed up. Everywhere it goes it gets attention.

Ive seen a white RS on the island, went up the dual carriageway with it. I expect he has remapped it now after i left him behind. To be fair it was damp though :lipsrsealed:
My money would be on a facelift S3 with a few miles on it for £20k, or a mk4 R32 with a turbo and change for fuel!
