A bought a CAT C write off, sometimes you can get realy lucky. Mine has hardley any damage they just sent to a rip off body work shop...

No insurance issues with mine, as long as they know it's been repaired or at least road worthy.

I'd say it would be fine, but you would have to look at the paper work.

I wouldn't have any problems with a Cat D, but there are loads of A3s out there so unless it's really cheap and is in fantastic low mile condition then there must be others out there.

Also factor in what you plan to do with it, if you are going to keep it a few years and run it until it croaks then it's resale value isn't an issue.  If you plan to move it on after a year or less then think about what it would be worth then and how much you would be paying now.

this is the car in question

i intend to keep it for a while so i dont think im that concerned with the resale value

or maybe it's cheap due to it being a cat-d,

cat-d is nothing 2 worry about, and need no tests like a cat-c to put them back on the road

you should be fine just visual check it.

If its too good to be true? Then it probably is?

Often you see people selling Cat D's that have only had light work being sold in the average price range of the car.

If this one is as cheap as people are saying it is then there is probably more than meets the eye. Is it worth it? That money would buy you a lot of other cars!

It does seem very cheap, have you HPI'd it?

7.5grand would get you a lot more than a 10year old Merc.

Mk4 R32 or Mk5 GTI just about!

Stoppit. Naughty thoughts are gathering in my little head.

How reliable are the MK5 GTI's at around 100k miles? (£5k-£6k mark)

Im no expert but im sure if they are well looked after they will go on like all of VW's safely tuned engines. Although might have more wear and tear due to turbo. Like i said, im no expert as never owned one.

My old S3 was cat D. Never had any problems. Was only a year old when damaged and repaired so was done professionally. After all the guy paid around 30K for it 12 mths earlier so it was not gonna be bodged. Just have a really good check around vin numbers etc in case its a stolen one parading as damaged one
