Title: Newbie, first Golf
Post by: chrisbeg34 on 12 July 2011, 23:34
Just sharing my First golf, got it on Saturday after wanting one for years, will post a few more pics but this is the ony one I have at the moment. Got it for a bargain price so does need some work

Will be replacing the front fogs with crystal clear ones, and it does need two doors drivers side, as it got scrapped of a post, when the old owner was driving it out of his garden, and tried to repair with a hammer by the looks of things .

any advice on what to look out for on these golfs, is much appreciated, or maybe some mod ideas, but like to keep it nice and orginal, ie no big bodykits

Thanks for looking, will add more pics over time, as new items get added or work gets done

Have to agree it is riding a little bit high, and the alloys do it no justice. Will be shopping around to see what I can find

Hello again.

Check for rust behind all the plastic trim, they are prone to getting really bad behind the sill and arch trims, catch it early and you're laughing, ignore it and it will quickly catch up with you.

Ah don't worry.... but if you find a bit now then you can easily sort it as its hidden anyway. at least then you can treat it and prevent it from getting worse.  little bits grow fast on these and it's when its shows beyond the plastic you have to worry as by then it's a bit late.

Yeah mine was done all the way back in 85 with that stuff in most of the vulnerable areas and it really showed when I stripped it last year.

Nice car - I'm going to say keep the wheels though, the factory alloys really suit the mk3 imo

All arches checked and sills seemed fine cleaned up and oiled so that's good news, after getting a flat battery had it checked and the battery was replaced, so decided to give a good clean 6hrs later cleaned up to this

after all that, took for a hoover only to find out after it would not start, had ignition and nothing, called RAC, to find out ignition switch gone

Read up on the switch removal have no pully so had to go with column removal, got a bit worried lol, but 1hr and a half later all fixed lovely.

Now to get to doors, on drivers side, and do something with that bonnet, might just get it wrapped in carbon, but wife does not want to lol. Will soon get the better of her as my brother does it for a living

Post by: chrisbeg34 on 25 August 2011, 21:43
Really want to drop it a little, but got to get the doors sorted as they have dents in them, and the gti trim screwed in, the rear window does not work, and the mirrors do not work either  so figured to complete doors to solve all issues.

would have repaired the doors, but owner before tried to use a hammer to repair dents looks a complete mess, and want some clear fogs for the bumpers, then I can move forward on other matters lol

Just find a couple of Dragon Green doors at a scrap yard, that way you get rid of the dents and the screwed on trim in one go.
Doors should be less than £40 each.
