Post by: Sugar79 on 11 April 2005, 10:56
One of my mates recon's the cat on my car is knackered, hence the the black soot/smoke, nasty smell, drinks lots of petrol and the car idles funny

I was wondering how much a new cat is (i know they are very expensive) or if i could get a 2nd hand one?

cheers for that link topher, rather interesting, dunno whether mine is due to that tho (actually i havent checked my oil for a while )

Also if it was over filled wouldnt it blow blue smoke or is that only if the oil gets burnt???
Because it just looks like black soot out the back

If u need a new cat, get a hiflo sports cat.  Cheaper than buying a standard one off vw aswell.
If there is a longlife near you theydid have an offer on sports cats £199

how friendly are you with your mot tester ? not that i'd ever suggest going to powerflow for a straight-through with de-cat, because that would fail emissions.. officer , wink wink nudge nudge..

lol, my boyfriends dad has a friend who owns a garage, they did my last mot for me, iam not in any real hurry to get a cat at the mo as the mot aint till oct '05 and i wanna shop around and make sure i get a good deal  but it is drinking a fair bit of fuel and at 84p at petrol stations at the mo its a bit expensive, and also of it smelling of nasty cabbages is horrible

I feel a decat pipe is the sensible option here then!!!

(It releases a decent chunk of power, too)

Yeah, a decat pipe is basically a straight through pipe that sits where you cats currently does.

I used to run one in one of my old cars. Cat went on for MOT, car would be MOT'd, car would come home, I'd let the exhaust cool down, then I'd put the pipe back on. The chances of anyone even realising your cat wasn't fitted would be very, very slim.

Its a very cheap chunk of power.

I think i'd be more likely to go for a hiflow cat, couldnt bother taking it to the garage every time to have the cat on n off

yeah think i might ask him some info about them.

I just went out in the car came back, gave it a few revs on the spot (up to 4k on the rev counter)
got out and on the ground from my exhaust was lots of black stuff, the only way to discribe it is like soot but slightly damp, it doesnt feel oily and there isnt much of a smell to it, its just my cat that smells, do you think this could be from over filling the oil (although i havent topped up the oil in a while) or do i have another problem?? the car does "wobble" on idle and drinking lots of fuel but there is no power loss.

There is not much point buying a new cat if there is another problem as the new cat will die a quick death also.

Any ideas???

are you sure you dont have a miss fire on the engine then. ifs not running correct you may get smoke from the exhaust.
