Having filled up this weekend and noticing that the price had made a huge jump to 93.9 for Optimax!
So I thought it might be interesting to find a better price. So what's you Shell station charge and where is it?
Bordon, Hampshire - 93.9 (9/4/05)
-
Mine
ripped me off charged me 91.9p on 03/04/05 but I suppose that could have gone up in the last week. That's the fourwentways shell garage on the A11 at cambridge.

89.9 for optimax way up north in kendal , the lake district, however bp is 94.1 for ultimate
-
Sorry never look at the price, always fill it to the brim as it''s my daily driver. There is only one station selling Optimax near my route, and so i pays what i pays !

from the blurb on shell's web site, improved performance and slightly better mpg due to cleaner injectors etc. Also say's it may take a few tankfulls to make any difference. Just started using it myself. wait and see eh?

As far as I can tell, V-Power is only available in the US. Note that the UK and US use a different unit of measurement for knock Resistance (RON and DON).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrol#Octane_rating
Note that filling up with 100 RON petrol if we ever get it, WILL NOT make your car perform better, unless the engine was designed for it.
the RON rating is a measure of the fuels ability to resist pre-ignition due to combustion. NOT the amount of power available from burning.
-
The city of round-abouts is selling it at 92.9p - I am thinking of buying some shares in Shell in order gain some return with all the Shell users here onboard
-
Even t'up north the price is a rip off, filled up last night, 91.9p a litre ! WTF ! At least Dick Turpin wore a mask eh ! You know it's getting bad when the price display on the pump nearly goes round as fast as the litre display. If this was the USA there would be out and out anarchy, they get pissed off when they pay 35c a litre or something. Rant over.
-
89.9p in Norwich.
I always used Optimax for my S13 due to it being a turbo and slightly fettled... without it, I'd get det and thats not good :(
on the Golf I can't see why optimax would make a difference unless you altered the timing to suit it? :undecided:
-
It's about 98.9 In Reading. TBH my car runs well enough on 95RON BP (Standard unleaded) and being a 1.6 carb engine I don't see much reason in using optimax or ultimate.
-

Don't know if applicable to digi's, but it's reckoned that K-Jet engines should run on a higher RON.ÂÂÂ
-
Ahh, that would make some sence then :)
I know optimax is a better quality of fuel, so either way it's nicer to use :) I had a Mk1 MR2 wich I altered the timing for optimax, seemed a little bit more responsive, but not enough to really go through the hassle again :)
-
Your car will run best on the fuel it was designed for. My 1990 Digifant Mk2 has a sticker on the inside of the fuel filler flap that states 98 RON. Look in the owners manual as well.
Running a car on a higher octane fuel than it was designed for will not boost your performance, it will only empty your wallet faster.
Running a car on a lower octane level than it was designed for, will sacrifice a little performace.
The RON rating does not determine fuel 'quality' OR power output as i said above.
-
so what does the ron rating stand for then?????
-
so what does the ron rating stand for then?????
RON = Research Octane Number
Here's the science

started putting 91 ron into the shed aint noticed any difference.
-
!!!! 94.9 today !!!!! (wild west wales)
bloody gutting, i burn 6 quid a day going to work n back

I think it might be time for a group buy on a feckin huge tub of octane booster apiece or a liitle tip guys Sainsburys super unleaded is only 81.9 up here in sunny huddersfield and its 97 RON which is the same as BP ultimate (which is an average by the way) and Shell Optimax if you notice LRP is also 97 Ron, I've filled up with BP, Shell and Sainsburys and the only difference is the fuel consumption
Worst = Shell optimax 156 miles to 35 litres £34.50
Then = BP ultimate 189 miles to 35 litres £32.75
Best = Sainsburys super duper unleaded 264 miles to 35 litres £28.00
I haven't noticed any difference in performance and i do notice little things like that ( I had a small leaf on my air filter and noticed she wasn't been as quick i overtake the same guys every morning :) ) but normal unleaded and I feel like I bought an 8 valve by mistake!
I'm getting sick to death of rip off britain 85% tax last time I heard I mean if the tax on beer was that much then ...... oh it nearly is! and less than 200 miles per £30 is fappin mental. wait for the black boxes    ok point made rant over.
-
Nice tip monza, Sainsbury's super unleaded might be an idea next time, worth a try for over a 10p saving per litre (I'm in sunny Leeds/Bradford by the way so not that far from you).
-
Yeah thanks - off to Sainsbury's to see if they have it!
Will they all have it do you know?
