Yep, been looking for ages for a new daily an ive now come to this conclusion.....
New cars are boring as hell! whos with me? they suck, weak arse engines, plasticy, uninspiring to drive, uninteresting
I cant find anything ANNNYYYYTTHIIING in my price bracket i'd want to own and run, so ive decided to only drive cars that are pre 90, So my new target....
Old school BMW 6 series
-
didn't you opt for something along the lines of this policy before and got stung by the big arsed fuel economy of the big arsed merc?
-
Im with you - sensors always going wrong with modern cars too
Pre 90 = win
-
Good plan. Dont lose the money in depreciation on a newer slab, support your local mechanic and drive some classic machinery!
-
Totally with you there Jord, much prefer old skool motors!
-
newest car I've owned was a '94 MK3.....soon saw the error of my ways :lipsrsealed:
-
I'm really interested in getting an older car just as a run around, budget of a grand, thinking tired 205gti or mk2 gti.
-
I think pre-90 car with up to around 97 engine in it.
-
How about an old school E class. I believe its the W126 one. The one that VBH couldn't kill on Fith Gear. Last of the over engineered Mercs.
-
W123 Derv FTW!

agreed :lipsrsealed:
Oh and think of the favour you paying the environment, keeping the old stuff alive vs. producing a new car :afro:
-
Correction. Its the W124. 126 is S class.
-
Just watch tonight's Top Gear and it all makes sense!

Oooh drove one of these badboys back to a client after its MOT 3 weeks ago, it was awesome. So much power, without the drama. TBH you wouldnt know it was a V8 at tickover, but on throttle...

"JORD BUYS ANOTHER SH!T CAR SHOCKER!!" Should've been the News of the Worlds last cover.
-
Yup, new cars are boring. But........ They dont really go wrong as much as old cars, their heaters work, they have stupidly excellent bits of kit like heated front screens, the diesels are actually worth buying and get stupidly good fuel economy, the list goes on lol .
Can you tell I have just worked out just how much welding my mk2 is going to need to get it through the MOT and that it will still be just as cantankerous with its starting and have just as crap a heater, and no radio arial and the perenial winter fog up and the rattly/embarrasing tappets once its fit to attempt the MOT  ???? I realy do love old cars but they just dont fit well with bugger all money lol.
-
You can buy heated screens for Golf2s and if you replace the matrix on it I suspect the heater will be quite fierce.
When I was running a G2 as a daily I never had any of these issues .
Oh and the 110 TDIs seemed to return significantly better economy than the 130 or 140 units, in my experience anyway.
-
Had drive of billy's Mk5 yesterday and yes its fun and quite quick buy has now soul.
BMW 840 for me! Prefer the sound of a V8 to a V12.
-
the best part really (and as shown on top gear last night)
you relly can get alot for your money if you look

I must admit I do get sick of paying £350 a month car finance off every month. I wish sometimes I'd be happy to drive round in an older model car. But I've always owned new cars since I was 21 years old. I keep them 3 or 4 years and then started the whole mad process of a buying a new car again. Yep probably a complete waste of money but there you go!

Huge.
Please keep going though.
The world needs folks like you to keep paying the depreciation to keep the rest of us in cheap secondhand cars.

Thanks and don't worry I'll look after the car so I can hand it down to you guys in a couple of years time

Yes, it is quite astonishing that you can buy a car that cost £50k + new 8-10 years ago. 2002 BMW 740/50 and Audi S8's for around £2-3k. Granted the only do 20 mpg and may cost a lot to repair, but its still massively cheaper than buying a new car.

Most of my mates think im mad because I dont really like any new cars, e.g when I say im not interested in any new BMWs, M3 etc or brand new Audi S3s they look at me like im bloody crazy. First gen S3 and E30s over the new massive, shiny, expensive, high-waistline new cars any day!

Sister bought a Micra over 5 years ago. Bout it on 40 odd k miles. N reg K11 1l.
In the four years of driving it, it needed two CV gaitors, a CV joint and a set of HT leads and two tyres. Just about needed a set of brake pads last week when it was scrapped. Never broke down, with the bits she needed to buy that car cost less then £450. Lasted 4 years no issues.
Boss bought a 55 plate CLK brand new. JUST after the warrenty expired the gearbox decided to get stuck into 3rd gear and wouldn't budge. Cost over a grand for a little chip to be replaced. Sold it to a mate and at the age of 5 years old it's needed the gearbox chip, four coilpacks, a MAF sensor, a temp sensor, a thermostat, rear brake pads, front pads and discs, a few tyres and the mileage as of last month was 43K.
People still say new cars are far cheaper in the long run?
The Micra has needed a few wishbones, wheels and a couple of track rods and ends but that's only because my sister used to like playing "hit the curb".
My MK3 1.6 barely cost anything, not had much trouble although I have lost my headlights but I think that's due to the 90w bulbs.
Only trouble is it's crap MPG on the motorway, although at 60-MPH it's good.
-
Our 1.8 mk3 chomps up the miles with no fuss, and just wont die! Even when it has very little oil in it...
-
mate got a 1988 730 bmw for £190 full service history. the newest car ive own is 1997 mk3 golf tdi.
i love old cars i think

I replaced the Matrix on a G2 Daily, and it was hot enough to melt you face off, no joke.
