Title: Infinity fitting problems?
Post by: takethefifth on 10 April 2005, 23:11
Just wondering if anyone could reccomend some easy fit good quality 3.5" speakers?  Do the JBL's drop straight in?

I got some infinitys and the drivers side drops in sweetly but for some reason the passenger side doesn't want to sit down properly - i reckon its the connection point against the foam stuff thats in there. Anyone else had this problem or have a handy solution?

And while i am on the subject - infinity 6x4's - why couldn't i get them to fit? Is it just me or were the holes just a bit too far apart... and yes i removed the larger fitter plate first. Would be interested to know if anyone else has had this problem?   Replaced them with JBL's today and they fitted perfectly, no hassle.

just jam the fronts in there!

I took my parcel shelf support off and measured how far they were out and drilled holes so that it fits flush. (drilled on the frame of the speaker that is  )

My infinity rears are only held on by two bolts coz i snapped the other two off as they got in the way

hows that?

Got Infinity rears too.

Don't fit properly...and sound crap because they rattle against the shelf supports.

They've been in about two weeks, and I'm now awaiting my Alpine 6x9s and acoustic shelf to arrive! :embarassed:

IMO really not worth swapping the 6x4s. Found that out the hard way.

Thanks everyone, it wasn't just me!

Dumped the rears cos they rattle too much due to not sitting properly, didn't want to 'make' them fit as i don't like destroying anything on my golf no matter how small! Cheers anyway.

Fronts are in but passenger one is wonky and you can hear the difference as it bounces off the windscreen at a different angle, need some different ones!
Any suggestions? - and again, i would rather not destroy anything to get them in properly!

I do like my music! I am hoping door pod conversion things and component speakers (not infinity, thanks sassy) with a 12" sub in the rear should give a reasonable amount of midbass in the front which is sorely lacking at the mo.

I found running 13cm in the front lacks a little mid range even when I was running a 10" sub. now I'm running 17cm and it seems to be a little better, but I haven't finished building my pods yet so hopefully they'll get better still. I made the pods so I didn't have to cut the cards

Cheers Dizzie. Guess i will just have to make do until i can get round to doing it properly. Component 17cm in the doors sounds like my best bet.. Don't suppose you make door pods as well as lighting looms?

PS. My old golf is going for spares or repair if anyone is interested - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9873&item=4543351523&rd=1

have just put in 13cm 2way alpine speakers in my door pockets. you can get new grilles for door pockets form vw dealership at around £20 inc vat. I would say that is probably the best way to go. I have also put in 12" sub with 4 channel amp which also powers front speakers very impressed with results

hope this helps

hockeylad72, are you saying vw dealers are selling the grilles that replace the door pocket for about £20, folks pay silly money for these on ebay. Is the price for two grilles including all fittings and do you have the part number.

I have a spare set of Pioneer TS-876 front dash speakers, bought them on ebay (as a complete set of front and rears), only needed the rears as I already have a front set. What are they worth to someone?

Further to my last post re. Pioneer dash speakers. I would be happy to swap them for a set of rears as only one of the rear speakers that I bought on ebay actually works. The seller was very decent as he refunded me half of the purchase price of the full set. So I am still looking for a set of rears or a single Pioner TS-H465 to match the one working rear speaker that I have.

as long as your door pockets have hinged pull out bins you will be fine
part nos -

grilles - 191 867 149 LN8  black in colour 2 required
screws - N0139649 again 2 required
nuts - N0386011 8 required these are exactly the same fixings as the rear 6 x 4 speakers

cost-
 grilles £9.33 + vat each
 screws £0.12 + vat each
 nuts £0.10 + vat each

worth mentioning to dealer about being member of gti forum as I got discount off 12% which jist about pays the vat

cheers matey

hockeylad72 , thanks for that info. I contacted my local VAG dealer this morning and he can get me them for early next week. I'll try asking for a discount. Thanks again. Could you recommend some reasonably priced speakers for the grilles?

no problem wellfan, I spent £100 on speakers which in my opinion is fairly cheap. all I would suggest is get the best you can afford and remember your front speakers provide the most music and all you need in the rear is a sub. that's my humble opinion but each to their own eh?

all the best

13cm and door pods it is, cheers hockeylad! Will do nicely for now and keeps that 'standard' feel.

hockeylad72, I managed to get the door grilles today with a 12% discount. My local VAG dealer is Verve, I got my parts from their Wishaw (near Motherwell) branch. All the guys in the parts department are always extremely helpfull and the guy I dealt with was more than happy to offer me a discount when I mentioned this website. Thanks again for your help hockeylad. I am surprised the discount available from VAG is not more widely advertised on this website.

glad to hear that you got discount
you got them fitted yet?

hockeylad72, not fitted yet as I have still to get speakers. Am I correct in thinking that I need 13cm speakers and do they fit exactly over the mounting lugs on the grilles with no modification?
Title: Re: Infinity fitting problems?
Post by: hockeylad72 on 21 April 2005, 21:18
13cm or 5 1/4" depending on mounting depth of speaker you might have to cut hole on door card for clearance, other than that no modifications needed
