Title: 8v Digi wont start after head rebuild :(
Post by: Bigdunc on 09 July 2011, 16:00
Hi guys im having serious problems with my 8v (digi) after head rebuild

head has been skimmed, valve stem seals replaced, tappets have had oil pushed out and valves re-lapped

we have head back on car and all timing set correctly

bottom crank pully is set to TDC and marks in gearbox hole match up
Dizzy pully have set, rotor arm to the mark on the dizzy
and cam pully set to match with rocket cover markings

problem we are having is the engine turns over but it wont start, We have a good spark.

We are getting smoke comming out the intake system most prob burnted fuel

it seams like the car is over fueling and drowning out the plugs .

we have tryed few things such as turning the dizzy to see if timing is a bit weak but no joy, all sensors and idle valve are in place

can anyone chuck me some ideas?
Thanks

Any more ideas guys?
Could it be we need to build up compression somehow or maybe a faulty ecu

All the earths back on properly - frying the ECU seems to be a recurring issue.

also are the leads in the right order? the distributor plug area can be a problem these.

I had spark but mine wouldnt start after it was timed up. I swapped the ignition mod thats ontop of the ecu and it fired up.

May not be your case but worth noting.

The intake won't suck in air seams to be blowing out, think that's the main problem

Sounds like timing...

It does indeed but everything lines up ok, I think it may be a problem from befor the head done, symptoms b4 head rebuild were same except had loads of oil on plugs, now we don't have the oil as valve stem seals have been changed.

We get a spark on plugs engine turns and cranks but just wont suck in air

my mate had a similiar problem a few years bac. it took us ages to get it run after a week of trying everything you have already checked.

when it did run it was massively underpowered, turns out the cam pulley was on back to front!

Didnt think the pulleys could be put on wrong way,
This car is really getting annoying now, cam is in correct, piston 1 is all the way up the pulley marks are lined up and the rotor arm lines up with plug for 1st spark, tdc mark in gearbox looks a little bit out but the pulley lines up fine, it is a high lift cam on standard pulley so prob explains the mark being tiny bit out,

The intake system doesn't seam to be sucking in properly tryed 2 airflow heads, tryed with air pipes on and off.

We have compression and we also have fuel when crank engine with plug out.

We have a spark from the plugs (new and old ones)

Could this be the ecu not dumping the fuel at correct time of spark?

Or does the intake not sucking indicate timing still?
