hi guys .
any pointers on checking the rack for play or anything do i need to turn the steering wheel full lock left to right ?
the rack is the last thing that i havent made new and think shall i just buy a new 1 or use the existing 1 and im thinking before the engine goes in shall i bite the bullet and just buy 1 as there only 50 squid?
what does everyone think ? i have all new tie rod ends rubber gaitor etc etc

Play is really about you turning the wheel small movements and nothing happens, just move the wheel slightly from left to right, does it sound knocky?... at the smallest movements do the front wheels respond??
If you can get a new rack for £50 i'd go for it anyway! that seems very cheap?

For that money I would, even if you just keep it for later... might have to get myself one soon, mines fine but still the original so not sure how much life is left on it.

Yeah you just need to strip your old rack for the remaining parts plus use the new bits you have. Also might be worth checking the condition of the mounts on the bulkhead... It looks small as its just the main part that you're getting, the bit that wears the most.

right thanx for the advice bud ill look at the mounts i forgot about them and ill get it orderd ! i know if i dont bother sods law ill put the engine in and the rack will need changing so might aswell do it why theres loads of space
-
may as well poly bush the mounts mate but i would deffo change it while engine is out as connecting up to the steering column is an utter PITA with engine in, fit new sterring boot while your at it and wrap boot in heat shield
-
thats a excellent idea ill grab some heat shield tomorrow i have the rubber boot allready .
any chance you can send me a link or something for the poly bushes im not too clued up on the uprated bushes
-
i believe venom do them and big boys toys
-
ok ill sorce them now im thinking i should of poly bushed the anti roll bar  but its all done and on now with new OEM bushes
-
nah ride would prolly be too harsh like mine is
-
thats a result for me then pal thanx for the info

Having mine done on the mk1 was one of the best things we (Chuff and I) did to it.. Steering before was a case of turn the wheel and wait to see what direction you go in or if you continues in a straight line.. Now it's tighter than a nun's chuff :)
(still need to do the boot though)

haha right well taken the rack off this morn so going to get one in the week im glad im doing it because i know itll be something in the back of my head i would allways think about ! .
