Title: Test Drove an R Today
Post by: KennyGTI on 08 July 2011, 18:50
Well went to see about a MY59 Golf R today and got to take it out a wee test run

First impressions inside were the GTI looks more classier with the tartan cloth and piano black trim. Anyways, out on the road and the R shows its colours  4WD in wee tight roundabouts = good fun, just feels so pinned to the road! Power wise it is quick but not nearly as quick as my GTI is right now but thats not really a far comparison. The gearbox in the R is solid compared to the GTI, no play in the gears and so smooth, everything just feels so much nicer in the R but suppose thats what you pay for

Not sure what to do now, would it be a step back going to a 59 plate from having my GTI from new and paying more over a wee bit longer. Got the weekend to think about.

Who wouldnt go for a straight swap? but buying an R at their current prices and the drop that will come in about 18 months isnt worth it in my books.  Great car, I'd love to have one but close to £30k for a used one is mad!

Buy it fella. Mk6 Gti's are common as .  drops a baited hook in the pool

Only 545 regestured R's on our roads.

A 59 plate must be worth a reasonable 25k which is what it should of been valued at new.

That was on my list before getting the GTI, test drive 2 of them and wasnt impressed with the ride at all and the interior feels dated after the MK6.

I agree though that an older S3 does represent a great value car that can be tuned to f*ck.

Strange, Gilly is partial to a Sh!t3. I have just driven one and it exceeds its title and then some: it is a pile of Sh!t x 3 and growing. He thinks that it would be less wreckable in his gentle hands.
A horrid car.

Kenny: If one has to choose between two evils, go for the R. But if you have the slightest semblance of taste and intelligence, keep the GTI.  :smug:

I've had lots of GTD/banter posts deleted by the mod (s).

That's why I didn't post for a while.

This should be a GTI forum giving stick to the diesel brigade, not the other way around.

Thought i'd share what my mates at forge motorsport have done to a golf R heres a link to there facebook page on it you might need to like forge first before you see it not sure. they have produced a healthy 320 whp using there setup and theres still things being developed for it so worth keeping an eye on.

its almost exactly the same car as the R underneath... just a different body and interior. may be slightly better put together. I dont judge cars on their looks alone

Kenny - looking at your signature picture, your white GTI looks amazing - arguably better looking than the pictures of the R you posted! At the same time, if you need 4wd drive, extra bhp and less money you should just go for the R.

God I haven't stopped thinking about it, my heart saying yes but the heads saying no! Not much sleep will be happening tonight!

LoL  I've been there and went with my heart

and I have had no regrets at all  ... ownership of the R has been bettter than I imagined ... with only marginally higher runnning costs over the GTi.

Yes, the R is still a bit pricey ...  but there are a few standard items that are extras on the GTi that people seem to forget.  These do narrow the gap to the GTi :

1.  Xenons as standard
2.  18" Alloys as standard on R
3.  Darkened Rear LED lights
4.  Uprated suspension
5.  Uprated Brakes

and of course :-

6. AWD
7 270bhp

I'd guess 1-5 are worth at least £2000 of the difference ?

The rest depends on how much you like AWD

I went for it though my GTI was accident repaired so I had motivation :)

The R I test drove felt much stiffer and the steering was heavier which is what I missed with my GTI (after repairs). But if I hadn’t crashed it or if the repairs had been ok I would have not changed for the R.

About the price – well it is pricy but I put it down to £/euro exchange rate. In Germany the R (3 door manual) costs 37375 euro (£33133 at current exchange rate 1.12euro/£). In the UK it is £31115 (with higher VAT). So if the spec of the cars is the same VW are losing £2k by not selling the R in Germany (or other euro markers).

Stop living in the world of 1.5euro/£ - it’s not going to happen any time soon. Expect another price rise in September and then in January and then September....

No, you don't lose your warranty with bluefin.
Two main reasons...
My dealer never checks and if he does it has been removed anyway.
My dealer (and all the others) couldn't give two hoots if it's been mapped or not, its work for them.

I am totally happy that my car will be repaired under warranty if it goes wrong. 14k (10k with bluefin) and no problems.

I think this has been discussed in detail previously.

Yes, a five pot would be nice in a Golf, far better looking that the RS3.
