Always liked the look of these but never had the courage to have a go my self. Since I've been smoothing my rear bumper I've gained a bit of confidence and decided I was gunna give it a go. This is what I'm talking about.

I managed to get hold of a standard grill for nothing and set up on it with my tools

Once the slats where cut off and sanded I had to find a way to fill the gaps left. I tried to do a bit of plastic welding but it is a bit intricate for the heat gun I have so was near impossible. What I did in the end was cut the shape of the gap form one of the slats to give me a piece that would fill the gap best as possible. The plan was to then cover is front and back with some plastic filler. This seems to have worked ok and it all feels quite solid.

Next step is to fill all the little gaps in the filler some more and then get it all nice and smooth. Then I will use an OEM R32 centre mesh grill and attach that to the backing of the standard grill. Not to sure how I'm going to do that yet as I'm kind of working it all out as I go along
More updates soon....

The one in the pics looks awesome!
I wouldnt have the balls to try this myself  but good luck, looks like youve made a good start!
-
good luck mate, look forward to seeing your smoothed work and this all finished
did these come standard on any cars?
-
I don't usually like non OEM mods, but that looks good....
....and nice house too
-
Will only look right with r32 front i think, but good luck.
Lots of threads how to do it but i think they all start with the hoffele grill or whatever it is and you can see why when you have seen it.
-
I will be getting an R32 front soon

Finally an update on this!!

I started by removing the central slat on the right side of the grill. I tried the honeycomb on it as normal but it just didn't look right. I felt removing it looked much neater. I've trimmed the honeycomb to the shape of the central badge and the edge. All I need to do now is work out how I'm going to attach it to the grill. I'm thinking about using a soldering iron and melting the to separate parts together. Or might just do it as simple as cable ties.
More to come soon..... :smug: :smug:
-
this is something ive been thinking about doing so will await your pics with eager eyes
-
Thinking of using some black tiger seal to fix the honeycomb at the moment.
-
I want to see how this works out.
Looks like it could be good
-
Here is how it stands at the end of today.

Managed to get some black Sikaflex from work and set about attaching it. With a few other household items I think I've managed to get good contact between the back part and the mesh. It is currently sat in the house as it was taking forever to harden out in the cold. It has 2 large hammers pushing the mesh down now

be good to see the finished product when its done :)

I live in parkstone and work down at Poole Docks mate.
Anyway,
Here is the finished product. The center part has had a few fresh coats of satin black and lacquer.

I'm just waiting for the sikaflex to harden on the centre part as the modifications made to it stopped it from clipping in correctly then I will be fitting it on the car later
-
Pat yourself on the back Sir! Great work there!
-
In a few places the sikaflex looks a bit crap but overall I'm happy with it. Hopefully I'll get in on the car before it gets dark. If not then it will be 2moro.
-
It's only going to look even better once fitted
I have kept a close eye on this thread, because it is certainly something I'd consider doing in the future. As I am not going R32 front (going fully smoothed Anni front), I am going to look into 'honeycombing' the lower bumper grills, as it would look odd having one and not the other.
Also, top marks for taking pics along the way (so much more helpful for anyone considering this)! :afro:
-
cant wait see this on the car

+1

Looks good . Get it fitted LOL
-
Can't belive these don't get made
-
I have thought about making them and selling them on. If enough people are interested then I may look into it. The problem is the cost. About £20 on average for a standard grill then £15 for the R32 mesh that I used. Then the cost of my time to make them. And then there is finding the time to do it lol.
-
And now fitted

I'm not sure about it now I've fitted it :undecided: :undecided:
-
Yeah not too keen on it either.
:z I hate to agree with you, nothing worse than all that hard work for it not to be as good as you hope.
Though well done the craftsmanship is great doesn't look DIY.
-
I like it.
-
I like it mate
-
I think with an R32 front bumper it would look much better!

R-Line rear as well11!1@1

I was gonna say that. Suits the R32 bumper so much more as the grill would match the lower mesh ones.
-
was just out round a mates and got to look at it from a distance for a bit it it grew on me a little bit more. Genuine R32 front is on the cards next tho I think or maybe look at a way of getting honeycomb in the lower grills without it looking too much.
-
Yep r32 ftw . Wish some one would do a debadged honeycomb grill

I Reckon it could be possible using the back part of a standard grill. Similar to how I did mine but you'd have to cut the bit the badge clips into away as well. Also an R32 centre grill would be too small so a bit of honeycomb mesh from eBay or somewhere else would be needed. I borrowed my dremel thing from a mate at work and he wants it back as he is leaving soon else I would have a play about and see if I could do one. I will get my own one soon so may have a go at one when I do.
-
I think that looks proper sweet...if you decide to chuck it out holla at ya boi!
-
like whats been said would look sweet with the r32 bumper with the same inserts
-
I was thinking about doing this myself but after a quick eBay search 270853803420 there's not much point going through the hassle

Props to the workmanship, but I don't think it really suites the car.
