Title: mk3 gti engine cuts out at 2000rpm
Post by: neely1985 on 08 July 2011, 12:00
hi im in real need of some help.

my mk3 8v GTI will start fine but as soon as you rev it over 2000rpm the engine cuts out. This was only happening when the car was at normal driving temperature, but is now happening from cold. I have had several mechanics look at the problem and no one has been able to rectorfy it. I have had the leads changed the fuel pump and filter replaced but the problem still happens, i have spent hundereds of pounds on things that probably didnt need doing and the problem is still not fixed.

can anybody please help me before i loose all motorvation and it ends up in the scrap heap

thanks
colin

coilpack may be slowly going wrong common fault !
crank position sensor could also be the problem although usually it wouldn't start at all. have you tried vag com on it?

i will get a new coilpack in the morning and give that a go.

cheers

i replaced the coilpack this morning and so far so good. im just kicking myself for spending over £300 for mechanics and replacing things that probably didnt need doing for an item which i fitted and only cost me £50.

i think i have learnt a lesson today "before i spend out on mechanics i will consult GTI forum first"

many thanks to "dragongreengolfgti" you have been a god send
now i can go back to enjoying my pride and joy

the problem was rectorfied up until yesterday where it broke down again!!

i have managed to get a vag com connected up to it and its saying there is a fault on the air mass sensor and the speed sensor. so once again spending more money trying to get my machine running. but hopefully this will be it once the parts are replaced on monday.

i will let you guys know if this fixes it or if the car will be getting scrapped!!

Remove the sensor from the MAF and spray it with contact cleaner and a cotton bud. Be really really careful though as they are uber sensitive. Worth a shot if its already knackered though, it worked a treat on mine and has been fine for 6 months now.

Glad you got somewhere near, afterall although there still is/was a problem never hurts to replace the worst offenders only to break down later on in life. I had to replace my coil and crank sensor to sort the same things as you have described so im only passing knowledge on. the maff sensor is also a big offender in the mk3 engine bay, like mentioned try cleaning it or replace once you have the funds spare. Also replace relay 30 and (187 i think) for fuel pump and ecu these will most likely break after time aswell
