hi my golf gti 1.8T makes a terrible whining noise when turning the steering wheel left or right
i'm thinking it could be the power steering?
can i just top the power steering fluid up? or do i need to replace the pump?
will a new pump be expensive?#
cheers

I had this problem last year and also this year. Both times resulted me paying out for a new steering rack, as the rack was leaking fluid.
Like you, the steering rack started to whine when turning the wheel either to the left or right.
First port of call would be to check your PAS fluid.
VW charged me around £1100 all in last year and this price included wheel alignment (£99)
This year, I went somewhere else, but still cost me over £600 incl new front tie rod ends and wheel alignment.

wow that is alot of money. i might check the fluid level first

obviously check the fluid first! could be something as simple as a small leak, in which case you can get an oil seal additive rather than pay out for a new rack

i'll see if it needs topping up but to be honest i've never noticed any wet patches under my car
could the pump itself be screwed?

Check level and bleed the system as a 1st step.
