Title: Top mount adjustment.....?
Post by: javalin on 06 July 2011, 21:32
Hello,

I've noticed that my GTI is lower on the o/s/f than the n/s/f, its about 10-20mm.

Can this be adjusted with the top mount position - i.e. shorten/lengthen the spring?   Also how do you know how to adjust/setup the position of the top of the spring?

ta

James

Do you have adjustable coilovers,if not you may have a broken coil spring .

no - std springs as far as I am aware.  Spring looks normal to me at least.

Any leakage from the shocks?

Also have you had either side of the car jacked up, as can take a while to settle again

Sounds more like a broken spring.

Are the springs seated properly?
It is possible one of the mounts is more worn, can you post a pic?

No - 10-20mm is without a driver or passenger inside the car.

>Sounds more like a broken spring
yes.

>Any leakage from the shocks?
couldn't see anything on the o/s/f

Have had the o/s/f strut out to look and all seems fine.

How do you know where to tighten the top mount bolts up to?  I.e. I have a bit of scope to compress the springs with them by the looks of things.

Sounds like a busted spring and to look at it probably will look fine, usually the first coil or two breaks and then the car sits on the 3rd and hides the coils that have sheared off.  I missed it on the others halfs car not so long ago.

anybody suggest a source of OE quality standard spec front springs?  Not interested in lowering just maintaining stock suspension.
