Title: Hypermiling
Post by: im_howard1 on 06 July 2011, 16:01
Hey,

Just wondered if anybody had a go at hypermiling? I read about this driving style in yesterdays paper and previously been told about it by friends, who said how well it had worked for them.

I visited the web site i was given and found the same old reduction advice, with the idea being you follow some basic rules and achieve a better MPG. Now normally I dont care for techniques such as this, as basic common sense ideas such as tyre pressures and so are always a priority anyways. But now im having to drive further to work im finding the cost to fuelling up a massive drain.

So im attemting to try HYPERMILING (said in a godly voice to make it sound more appealing) what are peoples thoughts on the technique?

Cheers Adam

Dude it's just driving sensibly and keeping your car in shape, having said that you'd be surprised how bad some people drive in relation to efficiency and have a severe lack of common sense.  Also depends totally on the type of journeys you make.  Unless you do mega miles a year just enjoy the drive otherwise you'll only save a few pounds.

Love the suggestion of removing golf clubs, tool boxes and prams / push chairs.  What if you are your way to the Golf club and was dropping your child off at the inlaws and you was lending them your tools.

Just common sense, so unless you drive around like Jeremy GTI with 4 bags of sand in the boot, and have under inflated tyres then read on.

I would imagine it's a lot easier if you can use a lot of dual carriageway and motorway as you can practice defensive driving a lot easier and can also maintain a regular speed with less braking which is what kills fuel consumption, however this would be almost impossible for me as my drive to work is B/C roads and choc full of hgv's and agricultural machinery.

Yeah its all mostly common sense things, still my driving usually consists of city centre and duel carrageways. Im thinking of giving the car a good tune up that might help abit. Im currently doing 30ish mpg, which isnt the end of the world for the amount of driving i do (mostly in traffic) ill give it ago this week and see how i get on

Id rather ride to work than get a Prius haha

lol gav!

learnt this off my grandad yrs n yrs ago, and another one he told me was not speeding up to a roundabout and then slam on your brakes to slow down.... though i do tend to be ignorant of that last part

I still fail to see the point in buying something quick then thinking / worrying about mpg, if you looking for good mpg but a diesel.

I read the first paragraph, then dozed off. Its all stuff ive known years. Turning your engine off and coasting?? losing your steering and brakes?

I suppose you would save on petrol because you could be dead!
