Hi sorry if this isnt in the relevant section, just in real trouble with my mk4 and would like some opinions please.
decided to treat the car to a good run as ive just been pottering about for the last 3 weeks or so, and needed some clothes for chester races saturday so decided to go to the trafford centre. went about 7pm last night, alone as most mates were with the missus etc.
had a bit of a blast, and when i got there, pressed lock on fob, didnt work. put fob close to car pressed again ........... LOCK!
went in and did my shopping, came back out around 9pm. pressed unlock on fob, nothing. pressed again, nothing. pressed lock button ........ ALARM!!! walked around whole car pressing unlock, at all heights, still nothing. rang my insurance telling them the situation, to make matters worse i was on the upper level so a 2 metre height restriction meaning i couldnt be towed etc! car is in gear and handbrake on anyway so would need lifting
get a text saying recovery guy will be 61mins , so went back inside to a jewellery shop, to see if i could get replacement batteries for the fob. after a lot of the staff looking down at me etc (probably because i wanted to buy something less than 100 quid!) they said they have none suitable. probably isnt the batteries anyway but i was really struggling for ideas.
anyway recovery guy turns up, has a look and a press of the fob etc, sees my delocked handles and says .......... F**KIN HELL!
next:
removes centre grill from front bumper to try and get his arm up to bonnet cable - FAIL
sprays a load of something into boot lock to see if can get key to go in - FAIL
wedges both doors and gets rods in to pull the handles, door knobs were lifting right up but still no opening - FAIL
tries to 'jump start' batteries in fob then assembles key back together, presses unlock but nothing. presses lock and alarm goes off - FAIL
did some laps of the car pressing unlock but still nowt.
at one point i asked for a suitable object to smash a window, but he talked me out of it as he says it may be something to do with the signal on the key meaning car wouldnt start anyway. he said all signals for security cameras on car park etc may be affecting it???
so he offers to take me home, i agree and jump in his van. he rings my insurance to update them, when i hear Mr Admiral say hes only covered for 10 miles from the broken down vehicle .............. F**K! im 46 miles away so ask how much would it be anyway, guy says 105 quid! this resulted in me getting the midnight train home from manchester picadilly to chester ....... £10.70!
got a mate whos taking me back to the car this afternoon, gonna take my spare key, get some spare batteries from halfords on the way, and as a last resort a few essential tools including hammer! im completely miffed as to whats happened, other than one other thing that may be related. my interior light doesnt come on when opening my drivers door (not sure on passenger one). and looking into it, central locking and interior light share a fuse??
can anyone shed any light on this? its got to a point now where i just want the car on my driveway, damaged or not. thanks for reading

Knackered door module in the drivers door by the sounds of it
You need to get it scanned as it will tell you exactly what's up with it

thanks for the quick reply. is there any way i can get into it or get it home before scanning?

I have seen this before when I worked for Green Flag. In a multi storey by me I was called out to a Renault that was exactly the same. In this one I was able to open the door with the unlocking kit. When I picked the car up and drove a mile away from the car park the key started working again. Also I have heard of a few cases of this where. In your case you will either need a service van to come out to you with skates. They can then jack up your car and put it on the skates to enable it to be towed out of the car park for loading onto a truck or you will need to pop a window to gain access. You may end up being charged for the use of skates which is not cheap
-
thanks very much for the reply, so if i smash a window and gain access, would you say my key would start the car?
-
Probably not but it would enable you to push/roll the car off the car park where either the key fob might work or the recovery people could load up the car. If you could get the bonnet up then try disconnecting the battery for a minute or so and then try the fob as this may help.

thanks again mate, so my plan now is to first check the spare, if it doesnt work i will look at the delock caps and whether i can get one off (they are off passat rear doors so are solid metal behind the plastic cap) and if not then smash passenger window. needless to say, if i get it home i will be fitting a lock to passenger side anyway for the future. thanks, andy

Let me know how you get on Buddy
-
is the boot lock an option for access? can you force something into it to maybe turn it and open it? or will this not work?

Will a scan show up a door module? Thought the scan only covered things with parametric sensors.
My door module is shot also, but it'll let me unlock on the button, it's the locking that it won't do as it thinks the door is open, on my car anyway.
-
thanks very much for the reply, so if i smash a window and gain access, would you say my key would start the car?
I reckon you'd start it, as the electronics for the locking unlocking isn't anything to do with the starting. But your car will be deadlocked, so you'll have to climb through a broken window.
One reason I'd never go for 'delocked' doors, as if you could get the key in, you'd be in.
-
mine does this now and again i just put key in the door turn left turn right and then my fob works its worth a try

regrettably its delocked so unable to do the above. im a lot more optimistic now anyway, thanks guys

It does indeed  Using VAGCOM, go into Module 46; central convenience. Scanned a MK4 last night that showed faults with 3 out of 4 doors

didnt you find 2 on mine rhyso

Does the free version of vagcom scan everything? All I need is a usb lead for that, right? I've got a scanner, but only does the engine things I think.

Aplogies for hijacking someones thread, although information may benefit him also, if I got one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAG-USB-DIAGNOSTIC-CABLE-409-1-OBD2-II-LEAD-VAG-COM-/330399696070?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4ced5b44c6 what could I do/scan? Would that program my spare key that I got from VW?

About £250 but like I said in another thread you've got to weigh it up on
1) how long are you keeping the car
2) friends, family, mates with VAG cars for beer tokens
3) 3 trips to the dealer at £80 a pop = your money back
4) is your next car likely to be a VW
5) it acts as a generic scanner for all OBD2 cars

Yes all points worth noting.
On the other hand, what could I do without the full version?
I've got an Autel scanner that cost £45, what would the freeware vag com do that the Autel wouldn't?

It's probably not much use to me then as it says it's limited at reading codes.
The full version may be worth it to me if I get another VW, which I will, so long as updates are supported at no extra cost otherwise it'll get rediculous, as it's already a bit pricey.

All software updates are FREE with the full version :afro: I started on version 704 or something and now running the latest 10.6.4 and that has not cost me a single penny

Cool, wonder if we can get a vag com guide of how to and what you need and what you can and can't do with it, as a sticky in the maintenance section?

right then .............. the beast is HOME!!! rang up trafford centre security before leaving this afternoon, to tell them that 3 dodgy looking blokes are going to be breaking into a golf on the upper level lol! they took descriptions of the car and me, and pretty much left us to it once we had arrived
spare fob didnt work, so out came the masking tape, taped up whole of the window, then tapped ever so slightly with a special tool my mates got (forgot the name ) and the glass shattered. he made a hole big enough to get his arm in and got it out of gear, then next was the big turnover! i put key in ignition, turned it......ignition lights on. 1 more turn and vrooooooom it started   pressed the unlock button on drivers doorcard and we were in! strange how the motion sensors didnt activate the alarm while we had our arms in etc! but i couldnt care less at the time, we carefully lifted the window out of the door, brushed up loose glass and bagged it up and i was away!!
cue the heaviest rain ive known for quite a while!!! 10 mins of battering!
anyway got home, noticed neither fob does anything now, both doors when open do not make interior light come on. refitted original locks and is 'secure' once more. what a relief. going to try disconnecting the battery tomorrow then seeing if fobs work but aint holding my breath. new window being picked up and fitted tomorrow. then when all is well will get re-tinted.
gotta say thanks for all the advice, and any suggestions as to what to do next will be appreciated. thanks. andy

glad you got your motor home in the end anyway, and good luck finding the problem :afro:

thanks mate, i see so many threads about control/door modules so im guessing it may be something to do with it. but open to suggestions as always

strange how the motion sensors didnt activate the alarm while we had our arms in etc!
Well if you've got dodgy door modules, that'll stop the alarm from being set, usually. But as you must have used the fob to lock it, it does seem strange, as if the module doesn't let the alarm set, it usually stops you from fob locking it. Interesting how the car didn't appear to be deadlocked. Usually if it's been locked properly, you can't press the button on the door to unlock, the key has to do it.
I have to lock mine at the moment on the key as it won't lock by the fob as the modules are dodgy, so the alarm isn't being set either.

sorry to drag this on, just a bit about today. went and got the window glass and cracked on with fitting it. disconnected battery for half an hour on the off chance it may sort the fobs, then hoovered out all glass christ it gets everywhere!! then reconnected the battery and after a bit of alignment got window and frame semi-assembled. tried the window up and down, working perfect so reassembled everything properly, door card back on, closed door, pressed lock on fob ........ LOCK! it worked?? i was scared to try the unlock :embarassed: but went for it ........ UNLOCKED!! did it several times to make sure it wasnt a fluke, working fine! so im kind of back to normal, with the addition that ive got my door locks on now for any dodgy moments. i know its not 100% fine as interior light still doesnt come on with the open doors, but at least i've got a way of getting in if this crazy situation happens again. so if anyone can pinpoint where my problem lies i will get on with trying to sort it. have to say thanks for all the advice, was a great help. andy
