Title: Sealant for GTI glass spoiler
Post by: jmsheahan on 04 July 2011, 21:21
I replaced the tailgate on my Mk2 Golf yesterday and had to swap the spoilers. As well as three bolts it seemed to held on with some sort of black sealant? I've got the small rubber seals in the glass holes but the spoiler doesn't sit flush and needs to be stuck down.

What should I use? Tigerseal, Silkaflex?

Thanks

I've removed a few and never had any with black sealant on them. The bolts should be more than adequate, so I'm not sure why yours isn't sitting still?!

It was kind of like a sticky black rubber sealant (butyl tape perhaps). Both of the tailgates had it   (one on my car I know was definitely the original and undisturbed). Bizarre!

Spoiler sits ok without it, just a small gap between the top of the spoiler and the tailgate and also where the ends run down to the black vinyl strip on the boot surround.

that gap get lots of dirt trapped. Mine has to come off at almost every big wash.

tigerseal or silkaflex would be a pain to remove.

The spoiler seated correctly through the holes?

The three rubber gromets are in the glass and intact and it's seated correctly as far as I can tell. I screwed the nuts down a little further than they should be (caps covering nuts won't fit like this) but the slack is still there. Not really planning on removing it anytime soon so thought a small line of sealant would do the job just to fill the tiny 1-2mm gap. Definitely some sort of sticky black sealant on both of them.

Perhaps I'll try my spare spoiler tomorrow and see if that makes any difference at all.

Ah! Cheers Thom. Is there anywhere on the high street you know of I can get some? Google brings up pond and roof supplies

For the amount that you need, I would try beg, steal or borrow some from a friendly body shop, or ebay, possibly Halfords carry it?
