What's the top performing diesel, the GTi of the Diesel Mk5s? I'm looking for a Mk5, want a GTi, but could be tempted with a performance diesel. Cheers.
-
The PD170 engine
-
Cheers, what does that remap to?

With the DPF (diesel particulate pipe) still in place, approx 185-190ish. Remove that and beyond 200 is attainable. A safe figure is around 205-210bhp
I'm running the same engine in my Audi with a 190 map
-
Hmm, that's quite reasonable. Are there any implications of running without the DPF? Also is the non DPF engines the same as one with the DPF removed?
Plus would a GTi grille retro fit the GT TDi grille? I assume everythings the same shape?

Only if the government change the current MOT regulations but its all speculation at the moment. No implications otherwise though; you're basically de-catting the car  Also you will eliminate any potential problems the DPF might run into; lots of documented problems about them not regenerating and burning off the soot they collect. Also some of the sensors can fail
Equally you should be able to run a remap without having to remove it which is what I'm currently doing. Should something happen then I'll remove it
Think you need the front bumper and a few other pieces; not 100%

Thanks Rhys,
In the meanwhile I'll just have to keep a close eye out there and see if I can bag one with all the electronics and gadgets that I'd like. Would love heated seats and anything else I can find one with!

No probs
Yeah I looked for a while but went with the Audi in the end as IMO its better looking in S-Line trim than the equivalent MK5 GT. I'd want to alter too much of the MK5 to make it looking how I wanted, where as with the Audi, a colour change to the wheels and some new rear lights along with a couple of cheap bits and pieces means I got it looking how I want it
With the MK5 I'd start by colour coding the rear bumper, sourcing some different wheels etc etc...........I much prefer the top spec MK6 to the MK5 but they are just silly money
-
I could probably live with the bumper as it's pretty much like my Mk4. My next door neighbour has the Mk6 GT TDI, too expensive for me!

Yours is fully colour coded though? :undecided: The MK5 rear has the full lower part of the bumper in black plastic
Yep; the MK6 GTD is 20K+++ for a 2nd hand one   They do go rather well mind....

Well, yeah I guess I'm thinking of the black valance. I bet after I've looked at all of this I end up with another GTi

Well you can get for for about 5K you know

Lol, with intergalactic miles!

No worse than some MK4's these days :undecided: Got a mate who has just bought one, albeit for £6500, that's done 92K and that drives like its only done 5K
As with all cars, picking a well maintained one is the key
I'd go test drive both the 170 and GTI though, make sure you're making the right decision. Fuel prices are only going one way mind.......
-
Well I want something newer and with lower mileage. I'll have a good look. One thing I've noticed by looking online is some of the GT TDI's go from quite a nice interior with nice equipment all the way to very basic looking with not so nice upholstery, so I'll take my time with this one, but yes I'll try both. So that I don't waste a decent persons time before my mind is made up which way I'm going to swing, I'll try some of the MK5's at the local VW dealers.

Also try a 140 diesel too as they are a fair bit cheaper than the 170 and 99% of them don't have the DPF pipes
Spend wisely on a remap and you'll have a car which is just as quick, if not slightly quicker than a standard 170
-
buy a gt sport 170 then get a miltek dpf bypass pipe with dpf delete software then custom code remap 220-230 bhp + extra 10 mpg

Sounds good mate.

1% do though
I'm with Rhyso a non DPF 140 then map the bugger
I love the 140 with the DGS 'box

That's why I said 99% of them don't

have you done anything else to it performance wise?
-
Actually, apart from the power, is there any difference between the 140 and the 170? Is it just a map? Is there a different turbo? Anything?

Different turbo for starters; not up to speed on the internal differences; don't think there's many if any :undecided:
-
From what I've read only difference is turbo and injectors and possibly ecu.. All things that can easily be changed over time for more bhp..
-
In that case I'll save the hassle and go for the 170.

The dpf is there to stop cancer in childrens lungs. Why on earth would you remove it?
-
The dpf is there to stop cancer in childrens lungs. Why on earth would you remove it?
To free up more power and MPG and mainly because its a pile of sh!t that's expensive to replace when it goes wrong

the gt sport 170 has stronger internals, larger turbo, injectors & larger brakes.
