Dunno how it would be on the car. Just taken mine off (mk3 8v) whilst engine was out, and it was very easy. Obviously everything was already off - driveshafts, sensors, starter motor, mount etc, and all that was left was 3 bolts. Make sure you lift it out straight so as not to fook the input spline. Probs very fiddly in the car, as there is not much room to manouvre it off and out.

Just did mine, its not too bad actually! The only tricky bit was getting it out once disconnected. U have to twist it up to clear where the driveshafts go on. I didn't bother removing the front light carrier panel and it was ok. Just make sure the car is raised enough to get the box down to the ground with the jack under it so it will roll out ok and the new one in. I found using another jack to lower the engine also helped!

not sure what the 16v one is like but the 8v box can be taken out the car easly in 30 45mins

tools needed

6or8 mm spline bit for drive shatfs
13mm for mount bracket
10mm 13mm spanners
17mm 19mm for bellhousing bolts and gearbox mount

hope this helps :)
