Title: Whys my Engine so Noisey? (8V)
Post by: Ads on 09 April 2005, 17:25
I have a mk2 golf 8V and has 105,000 miles on the clock.

I dont really mind the noise but would like to know why it is so noisey.

Ive been told its the 'Tappets' so me and my dad have given the car a new oil filter and new oil
with some engine flush (which is meant to help the tapets or something!?)

It goes away after 10 mins when the car is warm, just wondering if they can be replaced? Or if
any thing else can be sorted

takes a while for the oil to reach the tappets so thats why its noisy in the mornings

The only way to stop it is to replace the tappets.
They get clogged up with crap from the oil when the miles pile on, hence why they take longer to adjust.

smae prob as  mine mate ( 8v with 115k) had engine flushed and new filters back in october but the prob came back gradually over the months.
dunno bout DIYin it but the garage said 8 quid per tappet plus labour about 120 - 150 quid i should think

piece of wee wee matey  get the old haynes manual out and giv it a go. the manual should tell you how long it should take, but if its your first go give your self 4hrs so you can take your time and do it right.
nowt like the feeling when you have done a job like that and you get instant results  a quiet engine

Audi 20v 7A engine is even more of a mission

Its a fairly easy job on an 8v, just make sure that you get the engine timing right on re-assembling.

Did you fit a genuine VW oil filter and Synta Silver oil?  If not try that before doing the tappets as the genuine filters have special valves to help prevent tappet rattle.

i think you should change oil about every 5k on older engines and flush evrytime as crap builds up over the miles and one flush doesnt always clean the oil ways right out it is only tapping because the tappets are hydraulic and they arent pressurised the right oil is important the silver syntax is top stuff for older engines the gold is so thin it is like fairy liquid i think 105k is early to renew tappets
