Hi
I have just bought a 2001 MK4 Golf 1.8T and although it has been remapped by ATP of Norwich to 180bhp it doesnt feel right and I want to take it to one of the above to get it looked at and for them to sort it out with one of their remaps to try and get the best out of the car.
From the reviews Ive read on here they both seem as good as each other is that right?
-
Sounds like remaps at dawn
As with all companies that write their own remapping software r-tech and CARBON write very different maps so it's down to your taste, you'd need to try us both to get a fair comparison, I'd go for whoever is closest first
-
Its between these 2 companys for me too.. i was gonna go to R Tech, the guys seem to really know what they are doing, but looking at some of the figures which seem very un realistic IMO (like 246hp from a ko3s car with very basic mods like with a silicone tip and sports cat etc) and then hearing stories of figures been upped on the print outs (i have no proof of this just what a few people have told me)
Im now swaying towards carbon who seem very helpfull and realistic

Hi, Just to let you know re my experiance with r-tech, my ibiza went there in nov for a power run, standard turbo std intercooler tip etc, had turbo back miltek and with revo stage 2 ran 181/2 bhp and 230lbft ( all done my previous owner )
I've fitted a ko3s, forge tip forge fmic, jetex open cone filter loosing the standard air box. Gone back into rtech, deleted the revo, had full custom re map by Nick, n249 bypass and made 242bhp! This is my 2nd map by Nick, very happy 1st was on my 05 reg vrs 20vt, power on that is 207bhp and 230lbft only 007p and carbonio. I have no issues with the service recieved by them, also got 2 mates thats done various track days inc the ring and also very happy with the outcome, and like me, they will be re visiting for more tweeks as, if, and when required as more mods are done!
-
Sorry but in a previous post you said you got 246 hp !!! Delete of n249 will do nothing for BHP gains ?and I can't see r tech improving on REVO because they are very good maps
Iv done everything you have done plus iv removed my cat and I have a better engine which has the K04 so I wonder what BHP mine would make on r tech rollers with a remap?
R tech showed me a link to jkm rolling road day which showed results for k04 cars with REVO stage 2 @ 246bhp
Now are you seriously gonna tell me your K03s car is gonna out do (in BHP) a cupra r engine which has the K04 and REVO stage 2
Not gonna happen

A thread like this is not really going to serve any worthwhile purpose if its based on heresay and is in danger of damaging a reputable companies good reputation.
It's simple really, if you like what a company is saying and the figures they are publishing, give them a whirl and get them to prove it.
We're also in this business and are extremely careful about the figures we publish as we are not interested in selling on the basis of making more power than the next company. Any decent tuner will tell you that less power which is delivered in a linear and progressive way, and is always available - is better than big lumpy power at limited points in the rev range.
If you're in Leeds, you may want to consider us.

The car in question is also running fmic, forge actuator which with 12psi pre-load full turbo back, ect The reason some car don't make over 230bhp is down to a weak actuator, all the new 2006 polo gti we are stage 2 mapping will easy make 240bhp due to the stronger stock actuator and machined comp housing, buy take a 2001 aum and try and get 240 out of that without changing the old actuator and you will find it around 225bhp. The ko3s will flow over 240bhp with ease, just have a read on the forums. I can easy get 210 from a stage1 ko3s which has been proven many time on independent. Dynod across the uk, Inc dyno dynamics. I would but my money on my own live custom remap, vs any tuners stage2 generic remap even revo. You need to understand the word custom map vs a generics map, how is a generic stage2 going to take into account a 12psi pre load actuator, how does a generic remap take in to account weak actuators? I dont need to lie or give in realistic power output as I have nothing to prove, you just need to go back via my posts and have a good f
read on our history. Some car will go stage2 and not make over 225bhp, some come in and tune easy to 240bhp due to the hardware being spot on. Plus our unique linear throttle map helps with the air flow by giving 100% upstream air flow unlike the oem mapping, and we are the only tuner who offers this. I will give u a challenge, you have your car mapped anywhere in the uk, and then come to me and I will give you a custom map which is night and day, if it's not night and day then I will pay the cost of your first map.
I am sure many people to pipe up soon,
And just on another note, if the torque is too strong and too early on a ko3s you will never make good peak power flow.

A note to the first post. With all companies Don't take fancy marketing, big glossy magazine adverts, google ad words as a sign of a good tuner. A good tuner will have many happy customers who give good honest feedback which become part of word of mouth promotion which non fancy ad campaign nor money can buy..
Just search google and the forums to find which tuner will best match your needs.
We have tuned over 3500 mk4 golfs over the years and due to them making up 99% of our work load we like to think we are specialists and one of the best when it comes to 1.8t and 1.9tdi tuning. We can offer extras to remap which no other tuner car, Linear throttle control is one of the biggest.

R Tech
in response to you (cheers for the reply BTW)
i think iv already listed my mods but here they are again
2003 Audi S3 engine AMK with K04-023 and 40k miles
Silicone TIP
Forge 007
K&N induction keit (Relocated to below bumper)
Front Mount intercooler
2.5" custom Stainless Downpipe
Bolted straight onto a full non Res Jetex 2.5" exhaust
(NO CAT)
N249 Delete
now if his K03s car produced 246 hp with less than me, what can i expect to get with yuor map - no bull sh!t ??????
Actuator, which one would i need and what is this gonna do for me
Cheers

Its all down to how good your actuator is if you have a forge one and a 3"tip then 270+bhp, the forge b
Tip restricts the top end flow, buy the badger5 tip as this is proven to flow much better.
-
didnt think there was 3500 mk4s left on the roads

I'm gonna get the forge actuator then for sure
I have spoke to bill He is currently out of stock but making more soon so I'll grab one of those too once available.
Car is going into the bodyshop first end of this month and the remap will be happening straight after

Thanks for all the help I guess at the end of the day you make a choice (guess) and hope for the best.

It's all down to air flow, what bill found with the tip transformed how we can tune the ko4-023, in the past the ran stupid egts to make the power, even spec1 maps 260lbft 240bhp will make the manifold glow bright red. If you get a chance u can port the manifold collector with a demill.
I have a the same spec engine in a bora 4motion coming down from Scotland for a full custom map with badger 5 tip, I will pm u the logs once mapped.

Yes let me know the results
On a side note, my mate has same engine as me (but only in a S3) he has had the dreaded manifold cracking that happens on these. He has a cast one coming from the states with a life time warranty, he is only paying about £200 for it. seem a bargain!
-
As for manifold cracking, the oem mapping contains a modled or actual egt thermal component protection map to stop such issues happening. If mapped wrong then it's easy to crack a manifold. We tend to keep these protection maps in play to stop stupid egts, ad you many know the BAM stage1 remap will make the manifold glow bright orange. We can make the protection map work how we want depending on the heat build up.

that is very good to know..
my car is going into paint shop next week, ill be ready for remap after this

keeping things within sensible ranges is very optimal.
i do quite a bit of work for a guy who's quite heavly involved in motorsport and automtove desing, got him to have a look at a mates 350+bhp mk4 gti a few months ago as i'd got f**ked off with putting his engine and turbo back together
the car had 3 maps, std, fast road and track. problem was if you ever did a track day on the track map the engine would surely eat itself ether at the event or within a week or two.
so it went on the rollers and stuff was measured, turned out the diffearance between the track and fast road maps were the track map made a couple more bhp, the power deliver was horrible everythign got hotter and it was trying to knock all the time. couple of hours and a few new bits later, cars makeing more power with better delivery and things are running a lot cooler. and it survived long than it ever has done before without a bang
